In my opinion you have a responsibility to protect you and your family. The police can only help after a crime has been committed. I personally carry a hand gun in my RV and have used it twice over the years to chase off criminals. One tried to break in one night and I am sure he was strung out on something. The second was when I broke up a fight when a man was beating a pregnant woman. One of those what would you do moments. Next thing I know three guys are running after me. My pistol saved my life that day.

I can't speak for other states but here in Texas the Governor Rick Perry passed a law last year. That law states that all citizens in the state of Texas has a right to protect their property whether it be his house, which is considered to be his castle,or in a vehicle.
Different states have different laws and i suggest anybody traveling in different states then a generalization of the states law would be helpful.

We do have a CCW.That does not mean we carry a firearm everywhere we go.We carry a drivers license but do not drive a car every day. Having a CCW does not mean it is legal to carry in every state. In response to the OP question...you need to examine the laws of evey State you pass through. Concealed referes to "on your person" but you still need to check state laws for transportantion of firearms. In a perfect world there would be no firearms, no crime, no violence, In a perfect world that is....
First - Don't even think about taking a short gun into Canada. Also don't get caught with a short gun in MA without a permit, it's a mandatory year in jail.
Second - Don't get caught with a short gun in NY, NYCity, NJ without a permit.
The FL permit is good in 28 states but not in the above states.
There is a federal law that will allow you to transport a weapon through any state if you are on a more or less strait line from where it's legal to another state where it's legal.
This law is called the Volker Act and below is a copy of that federal law.
Title 18 > Part I > Chapter 44 > § 926A |
§ 926A. Interstate transportation of firearms
Release date: 2005-08-03
Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

I would like to point out to all those that say they have a CCW permit and think they can carry it everywhere are flat WRONG. There are different kinds of reciprocity and it's different from state to state. Even though they may not honor your states permit, you may have the right to carry while traveling outside of your normal circle.
There is a federal law on transport where you are allowed to have it locked in a steel box with the ammo locked in a second box and out of reach. Don't think that this is the governing law though. There are some states, like IL, which have great gun laws, unfortunately they didn't adopt them where the counties and cities have to follow them. Most have adopted very strict laws so essentially it is a "no carry" state. In fact alot of IL cities have outlawed handguns entirely. But, you can own a long gun as long as it is broken completely down. That helps you defend yourself right??? One guy protected his family and killed an intruder in the hallway to his homes bedrooms. He's in jail, not for killing the guy, but for owning a handgun. By any other standards he would be elligable to own one.
At times our countries laws just baffle me.... The criminals aren't legally buying guns, but they want to put a stop to our right to buy on legally.
To answer you question I do carry at least two guns at all times. I verify the laws in any states I'll be traveling through prior to going there. You can do that through the NRA's website. If you are not sure keep them in the trailer, unloaded and with a cable lock. One gentleman said the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. I would abide by that, but just remember if they ask you are legally responsible to tell them. When you are camping, that is your place of residence.... verify those laws by state as well.

That's a loophole that will soon be closed. Don't be surprised if the gun parts get confiscated by Canadian Customs.

Be safe.
WI is another state that is a no carry state.
In NY you can't even pick up a hand gun without a permit so with out a permit, NY is a no carry state - you can't even have one in your place of residence without a permit.
I also have a CCW and most always have mine by my side. (except Mexico AND Canada ... DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT !!)
For those interested, there is a "Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States" that many gun shops carry.
Published by Travelers Guide, PO Box 2156, Covington, KY 41012
It has good info on what states do and do not allow, as well as the reciprocity established between states.
