I wonder how long it would take for trucks and SUVs to fall out of fashion if we started holding them to higher gas taxes and lower interstate speed limits?
The higher gas tax would help offset the damage done to the roadways from the heavier vehicles.
The lower interstate speed would mitigate the poor braking performance of this class of vehicle. You know, if you can't stop from 65 in the same distance as a sedan, then maybe 55 is the safer speed for trucks anyway?
The nice thing about this idea is that it allows people who really need a truck a window get one and operate it safely, while discouraging the excessive use of these vehicles for bombing around Wal-mart parking lot.
Just thinking out loud I guess. Maybe I'll suggest this after November?

They already pay higher gas taxes...because they use more gas.
Split speed limits (for ANYTHING, truck, SUV, or Kenworth) are idiotic now, and just as idiotic tomorrow.

Caddy, I usually agree with your posts, but you're just pushing your minivan lovers club agenda here. ;-)
-Gas tax is already progressive. Drive a lower mpg vehicle and you pay more taxes.
-Mixed speeds on interstates are less safe than everyone driving the same speed.
And we hear the same "end is coming" every election cycle from one faction or the other. Yet the world still turns.

I'm sure some Texans can chime in, but I remember years ago when this issue went before the Supreme Court. They correctly found it constitutional to burn a flag. In response, Texas (certain counties?) imposed a $5 fine for anyone convicted of assaulting a flag burner. I love Texas...
No problem...the civil suit should take care of this nicely. Say, medical bills, $5K or so for pain and suffering, plus, oh, maybe $5,000,000 in punitive damages.

Why don't we outlaw all RV's over 20' while we're at it.
My truck is my daily driver. I work at my kid's school which is 2 miles each way. The wife drives 15 miles each way in her XB. We need the truck to pull the camper. For the limited driving I do it would be foolish and cost prohibitive for me to buy a little car for my short commute. The fact of the matter is we probably use much less fuel combined than many 2 income families driving mini-vans.
So if you want my truck off the road then you have to get my camper off the road. Of course if I didn't have the camper I would still own some kind of truck - probably one that got worse mgp than my current diesel.
