My Onan Microquiet starts and then dies after a few seconds. I called the Onan distributor in Louisville, Ky and he said I should be careful to only allow CERTIFIED Onan techs work on it since they have what he called a frequency set carburation system obviously implying no one else has the expertise to repair an Onan except Onan trained personnel. Have any of you folks heard of this frequency setting on the carburetor? I was going to tear it down and fix it myself but now I'm concerned I'll only make matters worse.

Frequency is the RPMs that that particular engine needs to run to generate the Voltage and Frequency needed for 120VAC-60Hz. I'm not positive, but I'd guess it's 1800 RPMs. (it will be in your manual, I'd guess). As long as you set the governor speed to maintain 1800, you'll be fine.

In other words, unless you make adjustments to the speed control, you shouldn't have a problem with it...Onan Mechanic or not!

Now, if it's still under warranty......

I have a pair of meters: one voltage, one frequency, mounted in a small chassis box that just plugs in. I used to set my older 4K, and EX650. Unless it's an inverter model it's just a run-of-the-mill generator and I suspect set-up is basically the same. These days you can get both in a DVM, but I like my meter box.

Yup, it's basically the governor or speed adjustment set point. You can use a DVM with a Hz funtion, plug the leads into an outlet, and set the speed for 60 Hz. Many of the Micro's run a lot faster, I'm assuming 3600 rather than 1800 like the golds and others.

I used to have to adjust mine when at alititude or else it would drop too low and shut off.

There is NO frequency setting screw or any other seperate part on the APU that sets the frequency. The frequency is set by the engine/governor speed. At the correct no surging speed at 3600 RPM, the frequency will usually be 60 cycles. You adjust the governor (engine RPM speed) to set the frequency if not at 60 cycles. This would NOT be the cause of your current problem with your APU. Doug

I think Onan likes to sell replacement parts. I just had the same problem with a Microquiet 4000. Removed the carb and cleaned the fuel-mixture jet, soaked everything in cleaner overnight and now it runs like new. The speed control is fixed, they use a metal rod and spring that you can remove from the throttle control without changing any settings.

Run speed of a microquiet is 3,600.

At no load, you want to set the speed for a frequency output of around 62-63 Hz. With a full load the freq will drop to around 57-58 RPM. If the freq drifts outside the limits (+/- 5 Hz I think), the control board will shut it down and set a fault code.

Another control that can affect speed is the idle setting. On my 3600LP, I had a problem with the generator shutting down after the Air Cond. cycled off. I found out the freq was drifting out of the upper limit of the band when unloaded. The governor was doing everything it could to throttle back, but the idle speed was set too high. I tweaked the idle speed down and everything has worked well for 4 years now.

Yes I have. IN fact when I access my ONAN and look toward the carb/throttle area it is the very first thing I see

There is a long "Arm" with, IIRC notches (it is either notches or holes) and a spring.. That's it.. Do not ask me how to adjust it
