I had started with TMJ type symptoms - clicking and snapping of the jaw whenever I would open my mouth.
I ended up turning 40 with braces on my teeth but the snapping and popping and clicking have gone away after they adjusted my bite.

I have had TMJ symptoms, and a doctor once said I had it...but I never really pursued doing anything about it...my jaw clicks when I chew, normally I don't notice it but sometimes others will- I usually notice it when chewing bagels/bagel sandwiches- that type of thing...I stopped chewing gum YEARS ago- that is when I would get the aching...I dont get any pain to speak of lately.

OH forgot to add that I used to clench my jaw alot- lots of stress- and they wanted me to wear a night guard- but I never did...I do notice that if I am stressed, I achea bit, its probably because I tend to clench my jaw too much and without realizing it, at the moment.

TMJ symptoms without pain? Oh, if only! I had 17 years of migraines, neck and ear pain from what turned out to be some bad dentistry that ruined my bite. All those years, I thought it was from a whiplash injury I'd suffered when I was younger. I took painkillers, muscle relaxants, went to the Dr for suspected ear infections over and over. Had a chiropractor "crack" my neck any number of times. Sometimes, my GP prescribed antibiotics although I had no fever and no sign of infection, just the terrible ear pain. Finally, I located a dentist who specialized in TMJ corrections and my whole life changed. Our bankbook changed also, since my whole mouth had to be re-engineered, but it was worth it. Bad dentistry can ruin your life.

The ear pain was the worst!
I have battled it for almost 20 years. Did the braces thing and that helped immensely. I had to have a type of electro-shock therapy on the muscles in my face because by the time I finally went to the doctor, my jaw was stuck and I couldn't open my mouth because the jaw bones were overlapping and I had a hole punched through the disc in my jaw. I still have trouble.
What helps me most now after all the correction is to wear a night guard. Mine is custom, but it is broken/chipped, etc. When it finally is too bad to use again, I will grab the one at the pharmacy you mold yourself. I think that will work and is about $10. Mine cost $500.
The night guard will help. If you have great difficulty chewing, you may need orthodontics. I was not able to eat solid food. You may need followups then as teeth tend to drift. I have some problems like that now and may go back and see if I can get a permanent retainer.
You may continue to have the popping, etc., unless your bite gets corrected. I still have it. But do remember this. . . surgery is the LAST thing you want. There is a lot that can be done before taking that step. Walk away from any doctor who says "surgery" to begin with.

I don't know if your asking anyone specifically but since the braces - the pops and clicks are virtually gone for good. I do get a pop or crack when i'm under tremendous stress and will find I'm clenching my jaw a lot. Once I realize what i'm doing and relax my jaws - it stops.
It will always be a weak spot in my jaw as it's been somewhat "injured" but with the bite correction and catching the jaw clenching, it is pretty normal now.
