Warren Buffet had a nice model train layout in his basement in Omaha when I was a kid growing up there. He loves 'em! I'm going to ask Suzie his daughter, at our next class re-union if he still has it. Might be why her Dad has chosen to buy-up large amounts of BNSF and other railway stocks over the past several years.

Personally, wouldn't mind laying my hands on a Big Boy HO Scale loco and tender for my set.

Here's Sullivan and his other grandpa watching my train set go by. Sullivan has learned how to turn on the train and watch it, although he still wants to grab the train as it goes by {NOT GOOD!}.

They are all smiles after watching several loops from the 100+ feet of track {I have a 9' bridge and a tunnel!}

Dick A wrote: OK you rail history buffs - we took and excursion trip today on a Budd car.
So, can you tell us where this took place, what is unique about this rail car, and what engine and transmission powers this car?
Hint - don't slobber when giving your answer.
Hmmm, rode in a Budd car in 1959 from Great Falls, MT to Helena, MT. The only Budd car the Great Northern RR had in its roster.
Let's see, the Budd car was self propelled by diesel engines (2 DD) with hydraulic torque converters to each truck.
The local train museum has one that they use on an occasional run to Two Harbors.

have a pile of N-Scale and G-Scale stuff but as of right now, its all boxed up.
Over the years, depending on where I lived, I'd have a layout then have to put it up for one reason or another.
No DCC at this time.
As I say I have put my hobby on hold. The UP Chester sub is not too far from where I live, and I used to take my kids there to watch trains when they were little. However since they have gotten bigger our time has been taken up doing baseball stuff for my youngest, and working on trucks for my oldest.
When they are grown I may look into building a layout with DCC, but that is down the road.
I have however ran distributed power (three locos up front, one in back or two in front, and two in back) on my 90 car coal train with just standard analog track. I was told this could only be done with DCC, but that isn't true, I did it with my MRC Tech II locomotion 2500 controller. This requires the locos to be pretty evenly matched, and very clean track, and track connections are a must. Micro Trains body mounted couplers, and Micro Trains trucks/wheel sets are a must on the coal cars as well.
For anybody who likes the big trains.........
Try checking out the Museum of Transport on Barrett Station road just off of I-270/I-44 the next time you are in St.Louis. It is worth an all day stop.

You must have known Mr. B at one time. What was he like before becoming a household name? How would he have had any time to work on a model train setup?

When I worked in Cheyenne and Omaha, I loved it when they brought the big Challenger loco out. The chuffing and the power was awesome. Diesels may be great but the sounds and "romance" of the big boys isn't there.

I live about a mile from the BNSF tracks north of Kingman, AZ and we see and or hear 96 to 100 trains in any give 24 hour period and have for several years.
They are still made up of 80 to 130 car counts, sorta makes one wonder where the recession is with that much freight going east and west every day 24/7.
I love hearing those 4 to 5 diesel locomotives as they are climbing the grade up here heading east. Sometimes there are 4 pulling up front and 2 pushing from the rear.
Wonderful history there and it's still living.

He's the same now as he was then. You have to remember that it doesn't take a lot of time or effort moving money around. The employees do the heavy-lifting and are the real heroes in the businesses. That's why it's a lot of fun to have tons of extra time on your hands to pursue hobbies/interests, and of course tons of RVing.
Mr. Buffett worked from home, and had plenty of time for neighborhood kids to come over to see his track collection in his basement. Many of our parents worked from home in the '50s and '60s in Omaha. My Dad did too, he was busy designing, and building homes and apartment buildings during those years of the late '50s and early '60s. Many of us kids parents knew each other because of our scholastic affiliations back then. What kid didn't like trains? None I knew. I still love 'em!
I'm planning to drive out west from Omaha through the Sandhills to North Platte, NE this year to spend a day or two there......the draw of that many trains a day does it for me!

Model Train enthusiasts might look into Walt Disney's (Google) "Carolwood Pacific Railroad". Nice write up in Wikipedia.
Also - the Disney family recently authorized an (HO) electric version of the "Lilly Belle", which went on sale last year (?).
(Google: "Model-Train shares Disney magic with a new generation")
A school chum's dad was a cartoonist for the defunct (long gone) Los Angeles Herald Express, and father & son were invited to an event at Walt's home.
My friend came back talking about the model train Walt had in his "back yard" that you could ride.
