Not far down the hwy., heading to Canon City, CO the engine belt broke on our cummins engine which has less than 3500 miles. If you could see the rear of our motorhome, covered in tar and chip seal debris, you would blame the belt breakage on the chip seal project. This is maddening. Stranded 5 days in Grand Junction Co for repair was a real experience, belt threw itself into the air conditioning compressor and that as well needed replacement. Anyone have ideas on the best way to remove this from my clear coat paint exterior?

You may want to try WD40. I would try it on a small area to make sure it wont hurt your finish, good luck.

Exact same thing happened to us (except for the break down).
I ordered this product and it worked very well...was safe for the finish and easy to use.

After I ordered it on line I found that my local auto parts store stocked it so check there.

Sounds to me like a good reason to travel to and fro on the INTERSTATE highways!!!

Most any good "bug and tar" remover should work just fine. I'd check with your manufacturer if you believe the belt was due to the road you were driving on because chip seal is used in every state and it SHOULD be able to be driven on most any standard type of highway without damaging it. Good luck / Skip

Good news is the tar comes of easier than the love bugs

Diesel fuel will cut the tar. That's the main ingredient in some commercial tar removers.

Now I know that the small stone that got jammed in the idler pully and shredded a serpentine belt on mine was not a one and only. Good reason to check engine compartment often.

Give GM Engine Shampoo a try. I bought this product by the 5 gal cans for cleaning engine compartments and it works. Water soluble, you probably won't have to scrub to get chip sealer off. You can buy at most GM dealerships. Diesel will work fine also.
