We check both the lug nuts and the lug nut torque before each trip. I usually then check the tire pressure every few days and the lug nuts every week of the trip. Have never had a loose lug or tire pressure problem but it is better to be safe than wishing I had taken just a few minutes to check.
Good luck and happy camping

Anytime we have work done on tires and wheels. I check after a real bad road. I have seen a 5er setting on the side of the road with one wheel gone. When I stopped to ask if I could help he told me his lug nuts sheared off.

Steel wheels. I check my lugs every spring but in general every trip or every other trip if they are short. I check the tire pressure every trip. I check closer if the wheels have been pulled for some reason. I just use a wheel wrench - nothing fancy. The thing to wonder is I almost never check them on my truck

We check pressure & wheel nuts before every trip & then every couple of days of driving. I was checking lug tightness in a camp ground in Cresent City, CA last spring when our next door neighbor saw me & said he had never seen anyone do that so we checked his, several were loose. Better to take the time than to have a problem because you didn't.

What is the deal with the aluminum wheels vs. the steel wheels. Is there more play with the aluminum ones? Is the metal more susceptible to expansion and contraction?

I check the tire pressure before each trip, but have yet to check the torque. We're going to be re-packing the wheel bearings anyway soon, so they'll get torque'd then.
