I'm trying to insure our Lance and the insurance company wants to know what it's worth. My computer skills aren't the best and my searches haven't come up with much. There was a post at one time that showed a place to check for values on used campers, but I couldn't find it. I've got a 91 Lance 980 that includes AC and generator. It's kind of sad that some insurance company's, at least our office, don't know squat about campers. They kept saying camper shell and we kept trying to explain what a slide in camper actually is. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would insure it for whatever I paid for it, or whatever the going price is to replace it with something of equal year, type, condition and features, should it end up being destroyed in an accident or other disaster. If you bought your camper in the open market, you should have some idea what your camper is worth or what it would cost to replace it with another similar to it. That's probly what the insurance company is asking you for.
Thanks everybody. The NADA Guide was what I was looking for. I told the insurance company what we paid for it and gave them comps on four others that we had looked at. At least the NADA Guide gives them some good info that confirms what we already gave them.
My bet is that it is covered by your truck insurance when on your truck (cargo), and covered by your homeowners (or renters) insurance as personal property when off the truck.
Without lots of discussion, I also bet they will not insure it for more than $2000, due to it's year. I doubt the NADA Guide shows it for anymore than that.
I have a separate policy on mine. I tried to tell them what I paid for it but they kept insisting that "it says here" that it I paid only 2/3rds of that. I couldn't get full replacement cost, anyway, only depreciated value. The company is Amica, which I am otherwise quite pleased with.
I do believe that I have double coverage, since it is also insured under the truck policy while on the truck and the contents are covered by my homeowner's policy. Better safe than sorry, though.
I'm like Dieselgrin and Reddog, our camper is covered my our truck's insurance at all times when we're out using it away from home, whether on or off the truck. When the camper is off the truck at home, it's covered by homeowner's insurance. Pretty sweet, it basically costs us nothing to insure a $25000 camper. Another HUUUUGE reason to own a TC if you're into RVing.
