Side note:
Has anyone stayed at Holiday Shores in the Dells? I'm not familiar with it. We are invited up by some recent locals, I just don't know anything about it. Any insight is helpful. Thanks!
We were at HS on Fathers Day weekend three out of the last four years. If it was up to me we'd have gone back again this year.
Popular vote meant we went to Smoky Hollow.(now I'm glad we did)
Anyway H.S. is a great campground. We liked sites 73 thru 77. Close to the playground and pool.
Steve, you should be fine in 167. That is more in the open and the sites are plenty big. On the water, I was thinking you could just put some in your tank when you get there instead of having to haul it. But, since it is just a regular weekend, there probably won't be a problem anyhow. I don't think they ran low until the 3rd day when we were they. And maybe they have that problem solved now. We were up in the Hawks Haven in site 71, I believe.

Butch, I was thinking - talk about 'divine intervention'... to be that close to the interstate and Madison hospitals!
Your valued opinion on H.S. makes me feel better going into the unknown.
Greg - Good point on the fill up. I'll see how crowded it is Friday and make a judgement call. I can always flush with it.
We're camping this week at Peninsula State Park up in Door County. Celluar connection is barely hanging in there for this post. Ranger lead kayak trip tomorrow that we're all looking forward to... Overall having a great time with barely any mosquiotos except for the one Amy just splattered on my leg as I'm typing this. )

I'll have at least a couple of of cords of wood by the time it dries and I get it split. This tree was almost 3' in diameter. Sure am glad me neighbor hired a tree service to cut the large stuff into pieces. The saw I'm using not be able to cut the large stuff up. Any body know how honey locust burns?
According to the NWS website, there wasn't a tornado in your area Thursday. If you're sure that's what it was (and not just the derecho winds) nobody reported it to anyone. With a tree that large coming down (and the rest of the damage Joe's gotten calls about) I would think it would be a tornado that maybe nobody reported to the NWS.
You are right. The NWS said it was straight line winds and no warnings were issued.
However, straight line winds don't twist trees and limbs off. And when you have several people from a few blocks away that actually saw a funnel, I believe the evidence, not the NWS. After all, weather men can't be wrong. Can they?
A few people at a business on East Washington Ave saw the tornado come over them from behind and touchdown briefly by the Howard Johnsons across the street from them. The Ho Jo had a lot of damage to vehicles in the lot, roof damage, windows blown out, trees in the court yard downed and misc building damage.
The guys at Zimbrick used said they saw the funnel dropping above MATC and they headed for the building interior. A lot of vehicles damaged on their lot, some severely.
We have been able to follow the damage from MATC to an area behind Wal-Mart.
At least nobody was hurt.

You still have a Howard Johnson's down there! No Way!

PS, glad no one was hurt from the tornado that, according to the NWS, didn't really happen!
The Ho Jo used to be a Holiday Inn, and before that it was a Ramada Inn. Who knows what it will be tomorrow.
My take on it, is that the NWS never put out any kind of warning at all, so of COURSE it never really happened. Everyone in my neighborhood is just imagining everything. And we can't POSSIBLY know what a tornado looks like if we are not trained meteorologists. JMO

You're right, they wouldn't want to have to admit that they dropped the ball on this one and people could have been hurt or killed because they didn't warn anyone.
BTW- I wasn't questioning what you saw or what happened when I posted about the NWS. I was trying to point out their flaw.
Things may happen in your life that are totally unexpected but with good friends, a campfire and a positive attitude, you can get through anything.
