Hey there, thanks for all your help with my decisions. After planning 10000 miles of trip, you'd think this would be easier.
We're thinking of adding a stop up to the Portland, ME area to coincide with our Boston leg of the trip. it would only be for a couple of days.
The dates are 10/8 and 10/9, so late in the season, but most stuff appears open.
I'm wondering if it's worth the miles to go up all that way (I don't have time to go all the way to Bar Harbor), or if it would be better to head to Cape Cod area instead/Nantucket?
We have a 10 and 9 year old, pulling a TT. My wife wants to see the light houses, and some of that type stuff, but other than that, we're open.
Can you guys help us make this decision?

My honest opinon, It's not worth an over night. Great time of the year, will be no traffic and everything will be wide open, but you'll be rushing to get there and rushing to get back. You'll need about 10 hours of drive time round trip. Good Luck and happy camping. Bill
The Cape that time of year can be absolutely beautiful. Almost everything is still open and you may catch the foliage down there, depending on how early the season hits. Peters Pond Park in Sandwich is a great campground-Columbus Day weekend is their last weekend open, but there's no checkout time on Monday and they are still doing activities for the kids. I think the same can be said about Portland, though! You are not talking an appreciable difference in distance if your target area is Boston.
We've made reservations at Bay View Campground in Bourne in the Cape. Looks like we'll just wait until another time when we can spend some quality time up North in Maine. The Cape looks to have what we're after. Thanks to all who responded.
MV looks interesting, but not worth the extra coin to ferry the TT over there.
10/8/10-9 the Vineyard isn't worth it except for maybe a day trip. The island will be busy with the Striper tournement, but that is still not very busy. The Cape will be asleep by then, but not as sounbdly asleep as the Vineyard. If you were going in July, I'd say go to the Vineyard. The Cape is even crazier than the Vineyard that time of the year, but once things calm down a little. If you get a forecast for Noreaster or the like, I change your plans and go to Plymouth. The Cape and Islands are not very nice during an October storm. I would not rush to go to Portland unless you are going to spend a week there touring Maine. The real question is what do you want to do there. It is obviously not beach weather at that point. If you want history, I'd go to Plymouth or New Bedford. Plymouth Plantation is amazing as is the New Bedford Whaling museum. If you want to go see the ocean, I'd go to Gloucster or the Cape. You will have ZERO traffic issues at that time of the year on the Cape, so touring around is not a problem. There are a few campgrounds around Plymouth and I believe there is one in the Marion area near New Bedford. Opps, I missed your post
Since you are coming from the south, then I agree the Cape is best. Save Maine for another time when you can do it justice. October is one of the most beautiful times of year down there, and it's just a little warmer.
