We camped at Pirateland at different times for 5 years straight, our first two years were good experiences, it went down hill after that. The last time we were there, crab carcasses and trash were all over the campsite swarmed by ants upon our arrival; there was a tree blocking the living room slide, and we couldn't get management to care about any of it. We then switched to Oceanlakes which we found to be much better maintained and well worth the extra $$ to us. I also have had a lot of good recommendations about Apache from people I know. Best wishes and enjoy!

Personal Choice on any Myrtle beach campground..
I prefer Ocean Lakes, Myrtle Beach Travel Park second with a toss up between Pirateland and Lakewood CGs for third. Would not want KOA and might consider the one Longs, SC... name slips my mind right now...
BUT for activities I think all of them would have something for an 11 year old.
Check out my webshots for pictures of Ocean lakes this year and last plus I have some from late July 2007 of the Travel park too. I have not down loaded my Summer 08 Ocean Lakes CG pictures just been too busy since I got back from vacation..might work on that tonight in the camper...

We just returned from a week at PL - we had a great time.
Overall, the CG was clean and the staff we nice. We had an issue with our power connection flipping the breaker a few times - told the front desk and within 15 minutes someone was there to fix it. He said the fuse was old and replaced it - he also said my plug was 'dirty' and he cleaned it with some emory coth.
The DW said, to change things up, next time we'll stay at OL.

OL is a very nice campground. Great facilities, good security and location. Can't comment on the other campgrounds though. The only downside with OL are all the golf carts. Millions of them and not much enforcement. Saw young kids driving the things. At night the kids make the loop in the carts and it is somewhat of a madhouse. On the plus side though, security runs the kids off at 11:00 pm and things quiet down. OL is the Sturgis of golf carts. Next time we go we are going to try to find someplace a little more sedate. Too bad, otherwise, OL is a very nice campground.
We are heading out in another week and a half to Myrtle Beach State Park. I have heard that it is a nice SP. Can't wait for the Sun and the Sand... Any comments about the place???
thanks

We did MB State Park last year in June. Enjoyed it but it was crowded but we would go back again. Probably in the spring or fall.
So I got back from another week at Myrtle Beach today and I am already to go back!!!
I know that this is one of the more popular threads on this forum so I wanted to share my opinion about the two campgounds that I have stayed at. To be fair, I have only stayed at Pirateland and Myrtle Beach Travel Park. I stayed there exactly the same length (one week each), exactly the same month (June). Here are my thoughts:
MYRTLE BEACH TRAVEL PARK - Really liked this park. Defintely more easy to manuever (I have a 41 foot fiver). Nice beach access, beautiful views of the ocean from several campsites. Large camp areas with pinic tables covered. Indoor, outdoor pools with lazy river are very nice and not near as crowded as PIRATELAND. Snak bar and arcade are small, no playground, mini gold or paddle boating for the kids. Bath houses are nice. Area is great for shopping. No golf carts. Very nice employees, extremely helpful.
PIRATELAND - Liked the park, may go back. Very, very, did I mention very hard to manuever at almost any campsite in the entire park. Lots and lots of golf carts (expensive but necessary because the park is so large, can't really walk any where). The best part about the trip was the nightly golf cart parade (everyone decorates and drives down the beach road slapping high fives, getting to know others, etc. I really liked this, so did my two year old). The indoor and outdoor pools with lazy river are very nice, but so packed we were only able to actually enjoy it for a short time. Beach access is good, but no oceanview from any campsite. Nice playground for the kids but right under the sun. Burns you during the day. Arcade, store, paddle boats, mini golf and snackbar area are superior to MYRTLE BEACH TRAVEL PARK. Very nice employees, althought they screwed our reservation up - manager was very helpful adjusting us.
So, my opinion =
FOR ADULTS or FAMILIES that just want to swim - MYRLTE BEACH TRAVEL PARK.
FOR CHILDREN - PIRATELAND for the activities. Just be really prepared to be cramped in like sardines and bring your patience to park your rig.
We were there end of March one year....PL had no wifi, though they say they do...used to have to go to office to tap in. I paid to tap into OL while at pirateland...was well worth the $10 I had to pay.

Love Camping!!
PIRATELAND...if you want to be 3 feet from your neighbors ,and don't like campfires (they don't allow them), and swim in a pool that's only 4 ft. deep, AND thet don't give refunds for ANY reason. Have Fun!!
