If you like Seafood try Hymans for great seafood in downtown Charleston.

Ditto that!

With Kids in mind:
The Battery
Fort Sumter (This is an especially good outing for kids and adults alike!)
Old South Carriage Tours (seems kinda cheesy, but with the right guide, you get a very good tour and insight into the history.. I would do this first)
The Aquarium (if its really hot and you want to be indoors)

Food, food, food. (Try this site and do a search for Charleston www.roadfood.com

We have some pictures from past trips at the link in the signature below.

This is such a great trip! I would have never done the carriage tour had my DH & DS not pushed the issue but it was the best thing we could have done. Patriots Point is good and is a full day deal. Meeting Street is good but not sure how much the kids will enjoy it. But you could do the Aquarium and Ft Sumter and then hit Meeting St for dinner. If your staying at James Island the water park is great but there is lots to do there. There is fun "water popper" deal at the park there to cool down and great fields for flying a kite. You'll have a great time!!

The Greatest Free Show in Charleston. That's how they bill it.
Hope the pictures post OK.

The Citadel Cadets.
3:45 every Friday at the Citadel parade grounds the entire student body of cadets, 1900 strong put on a one hour show that you don't want to miss. They start with the bagpipers then the fife and drums and then the full assembly. The week we were there happened to be the home coming so there were a lot of past graduates there. This included three federal Judges, a few General Officers and a whole bunch of guys with big gold class rings. It was kind of neat, at the end when they march by the stands for review, the alumni in the stands wait until the platoon that they served in is passing then they stand and salute.

This is the schools mascot, When one of the graduates (and later an instructor at the school) was killed in Viet Nam (1965), every cadet in the school donated their brass belt buckles, buttons and head dress. They then had them melted down to cast the statue. A few yeas later this Officer's son ( a citadel grad) was also killed in Viet Nam, the statue is dedicated to both of them.

Ft Sumter is ok but not as good as we expected. If we had to choose between it and just a harbor tour we'd take the harbor tour. Definately check out the Yorktown, this history is amazing. Take a walk on the battery and past Rainbow Row and check out the market. Middleton Place plantation is beautiful and the waterparks I hear are a blast. If you get a chance for a nice dinner out, California Dreaming is like an old fort on the water and you can see dolphins surfacing while you eat. Be prepared for very hot and muggy weather but you'll still have a great time.....don't forget to hit the beaches!!!

We spent the 1st week of June at James Island. Everyone is right, there is more to see and enjoy in and around Charleston than you'll be able to do.

We ate at the Hominy Grill and the food was delicious. I found out after we returned home that the chef there was just named the best chef in the southeast by the James Beard Foundation. Enjoy!

Tell Ruthie and Joanie Hello from Ohio----we have stayed at this KOA many times. (both daughters live in the area). Very nice people, accommodating. The campground is really neat. And the oldest grandson is ready to play grandpa (Poppa Jon) a pingpong game anytime.
