Ok, pick on me,, I am brand new at this camper thing,, Lost wife short time ago and now going to get a unit for me and HAVE to take my two cats,, all I got left.. "Tiny " is 7 years old and standoffish,, hates to go in the cage at all.. Bassett, the young one,2 is laid back talker.. loves everyones.. I have this plan of once the rig is here,, starting up the engine and generator/AC and taking them out in cages and then let them loose.. all while sitting still in the yard..

Is this a good way to start them off and let them get used to the noise and explore?

Really? I just can't stand to leave them alone while I am gone. planning on traveling alone , since I live alone and need all the help I can get.

Once I really figer out this board. I am sure I will have many more questions.. Good looking site so far.

Hi --- we took our cats out to the MH (when we had it) and let them roam...took them out in the cage and left the cage in there with them. Also included water/food/litterbox. After a coupla hours, we took them back to the house. We did this for a few days. Then we got them comfortable one day and started the motor. After a coupla more days, we took the MH for a drive with them in it. They LOVED the MH. Now here's the kicker....we sold the MH and bought a 21 foot 5er.....One cat loves it -- the other HATES it!!! He tries to open the door!!!! We keep trying!!

Good luck!

Well lets not get catty about this ok.... Actually you will finds lots of cats out there. But one word of caution, they love to get up under the front dash, usually behind the brake or gas peddle. Just put them in there, they'll hide for a few hours, and mew, as they get use to it they'll be coming around. Give them a box to hide in at the start.

Sorry to about the wife but glad to hear you are not baring yourself in the house, but getting out there. Good luck and mewing travels. Bill

We have taken our cats camping before.

You have a good idea to get them used to it. I like the method Dschultz used.

Our cats ride in the truck on the kids laps, then into the pup they go.

We have not had them camping in over a year, so we will have to go through the break-in period again .

One word of caution: be careful of birds of prey if you have them outside.

Good luck!

With our TT in the driveway, our six year old always wandered in and out but we never thought to take him with us until last year. The first 30 minutes he howled up a storm to the point we almost turned around. All of a sudden he was out of the cage and roaming around the SUV. Needless to say, he goes everywhere with us now. He sees the SUV hooked up and he is in and out of the car and the trailer ready to hit the road.

sorry about your wife
We have 2 cats a 12 yr old tortie and a 4ms old male. I have started putting them in the RV for an hour or 2 with me and let them explore. Next we will turn on the RV with them in it and then we will take them for a trip to the local Walmart for an hour or so. Then another weekend will be a short camping trip locally. They only go out on leashes and harness and we hope this will work. Good luck

Keep them in their cages while traveling and setting up. They and slip out very easy especially with only one of you to watch. Be care with slides they like to hide behind them. If you keep them caged while driving you won't have to worry about them getting up in the dash.

QTLA: What a beautiful cat!! Benn: Most likely the cats will love the RV - ours is not particularly sociable most of the time but if she happens to be outside when I go into the MH, she will come to the door and beg to come in. She has gone into our 5vers and TT any time she could find a door open!! I would suggest that you take the cats in with you when you go there to clean or just to sit and watch TV/read for while and let them get used to the surroundings - do this several times, until they is comfortable. Then the next step would be to start the engine and just let it idle for a while - do this a few times until they are comfortable, then drive a short distance and return home. After a few times of this, you will be able to judge their behavior. If they are not crate trained and hate the crate as much as ours does, letting them find their own comfort riding spot will usually work as long as it is not under your feet. Sam used to dive behind/under the sofa as soon as the engine started - our new sofa does not have the space to do that so she has settled on a spot on the floor near the recliner/ottoman, mostly. If the trip is long enough, she will sometimes come up and share Katie's bed which is so funny because she claimes to dislike the dogs. And she has growled at them enough that Katie is now uncomfortable being close to the cat sometimes. They are working it out, tho!! I would highly recommend getting harnesses for them - this enables you to have a handle to pull them out of tight places, if necessary, and makes a really good grab bar if they try to run past you to the door. You have to watch them very carefully because they are great, and very quick, escape artists!! If they do try to get out the door, you will have to be sure they are closed in the bedroom or bathroom before you open the door. Sam no longer does this but she has escaped a couple of times - fortunately it was when we were in a park and she returned in short order. (Don takes a long time to get into/out of the door in the MH due to his disability and he doesn't watch for the cat). Always, always know they are contained before operating the slides - the cozy cubbyholes at the ends of the slides are excellent cat hiding spots. If they have beds in the house, take those along and most likely they will gravitate to them - perhaps even while traveling. It may be something of a challenge to find a spot for the litter box but you can do it with a little studying. Be sure to take their food so you don't have to change their diet while traveling. It may be a good idea to take water from home or use bottled water, too. I'm glad you are taking the cats with you in your new stage in life - too many in these circumstances give the pets up and that is so cruel, I think. I'm sorry about your wife's death, but you seem to be planning for an independent future and this is a good thing!! Happy travels!!

We took our 4 cats in our MH on a TX-MI-TX 15 day trip. We just threw them in the coach and took off. All of them had ridden in our trucks before so riding was not new. They all gave the place the once over then settled down. By the third day, they all would ride on the front dash and watch the world go by. They never tried to jump out because the MH was their safe home. To this day, my oldest female will hang out in the MH which is parked at my camp for now. I never have to worry where she is because she is in the open door of the MH. All of our kitties, 3 black and white, and one torti, are indoor cats only. The only exception is the older B&W female which goes to camp with me and I let her outside there. She never gets more than 15 feet away from me except when she is the MH gate guard. Have fun traveling with your kitties.....chris3

Welcome! You will find lots of great folks here with big hearts and plenty of experience. That is the way to do it...take them out into the rig in the yard for awhile, let them explore before moving it out onto the road.
Our cat still does not care for the motion going down the road - she hides under the barrel chair. THe minute we stop she is out wandering and looking out windows. She was never crated, so can't help you there...but they will get into a place they feel safe and stay there while your moving.
Best of luck to you, and keep us posted on your adventures!
