Since it's "Just out of the box" I'm guessing it's just the first time it's hotted up.. But I would suggest you try a couple more times.. If it continues to "Smell hot" do as you have done and find someone who's better at "Smell Detection" (IE: a honda service tech) to come over for a "Cool one" and a sniff.

I have the Honda 3000 generator, Mine had a new burning smell when first fired up. Mine starts my AC just fine. If the Honda is overloaded for some reason, It has a auto-shut down to keep from burning up.
Run your Geny again, keep an eye on it as you let it warm up and run thru the cycle. The burning new smell should go away

But, keep an eye on it just in case something is wrong, It wont start woty-out oilm and will even shut off automatically if it runs low on Oil

I Love My Honda!

My vote is not enough juice.... Be careful or contact the mfg of the a/c unit and see how much juice your really need to start up the a/c unit...

If the thermostat for the AC has a low/high setting switch, make sure you start on low
