My husband and I along with my Brother and sister-in-law are planning a trip to Gettysburg, PA from 8/2/08 - 8/9/08 and then moving to Williamsburg, VA from 8/9/08 - 8/16/08. We will be camping in our 5th wheel.
I have done searches on the "tourist" things to do, but was looking for some things that wouldn't be in the tourist hand books.
I thank you in advance for your help and if you ever need thing to see and do in Northwest Vermont, please feel free to contact me.
I've not been to Gettysburg, but have visited Williamsburg many times.
When you get there, go to the Colonial Williamsburg visitor center and pick up the tour guide at the info desk. That will help you plan your visit and also describe the evening programs that change from night to night. If the lines are short, get your tickets then. If you want to eat at one of the colonial taverns, make reservations as soon as you get there.
Be sure to visit Yorktown Battlefield and Jamestown (both of them). Yorktown and the actual Jamestown are both national parks. Jamestown Settlement is more of a re-enactment site and includes a rebuilt fort and rebuilt ships that the settlers arrived on. The real Jamestown site is mainly archeological digs that are ongoing. If you already have a parks pass, its free and worth a couple of hours. Yorktown has a nice museum and a driving tour of the battleground.
And one night you have to eat at Pierce's Pit Barbeque.

And the air really does smell like chocolate!
American History was never my strong suit, but I can easily say that no historical site effected me like the Gettysburg battlefield. We took the bus tour with narration and it was truly amazing. Ok, so not a local pointer, but just my 2 cents!
