We just began our full time RV life and will be in South Dakota in July. I have reserved a week in Spearfish but would like to find a campground that we could stay maybe a month....Hopefully with a monthly rate.
We will have visited Mt Rushmore and The Chief Crazy Horse monuments so we do not necessarily need to be in those areas for a month.

We are just looking for a peaceful campground not to far from shopping etc. We will be traveling through S.D. on our way to Minn., so eastern S.D. would be fine.

Thanks

Barb

Watertown SD has a nice campground. It has monthly rates and full hookups. Watertown is the home of the Terry Redlin museum, has a nice small zoo, some shopping, the Bodies Human exihibit and is only 1 1/2 hrs from Sioux Falls, so that is a great day trip. Don't know if you fish, but there is great fishing up there. The campground has a nice wildlife trail and is located on Lake Kampeska. It's a nicely run park. The campground is called Codington County Memorial RV Park. The phone number is 605-882-6290. Enjoy your trip.....

RAFTER J is centrally located for easy access to all the Black Hills area attractions. Its just outside of Hill City. Large sites and very well managed. Have fun...

We recently met some full-timers in the Black Hills who stay most of the summer at Hart Ranch near Rapid City. Can't speak to it myself. We're currently at Left Tailrace COE CG at Big Bend Dam near Fort Thompson. 14-day limit, however....but cheap: $7 with electric with your Golden Geezer card.

Have a great time on the road.

Thanks everyone for some good suggestions. I checked out the Rafter J but they charge 42 dollars a day with no brake for weekly rates. It looks very nice, but that would be more than $600 for two weeks. A little too pricy for us.

Stay away from Rafter J. They will stick it to you every chance you get. We stayed there out of convenience and the big AAA symbol on their website and billboard. When we get there they tell us no AAA discount.

They offer a cheap all you can eat pancake breakfast, sounds good right? Nope. Want a piece of sausage? $2.50, a couple pieces of bacon? $2.50. A 6oz milk? , $2...

Go a little farther south and you have a few choices in Custer.

In the east end of the state, our home town of Madison is the site of Lake Herman SP. Very pretty, near but not in town, maybe 40 miles to Sioux Falls.

Check out Fishnfry Campground 6 miles south of Deadwood on Hiway 385. Small quiet campground, lovely scenery, mountain stream meanders through, trout fishing pond, and the owners, John and Kelly are the best. Website is www.fishnfry.com

Custer Gulch, in Custer, may be the answer. Very close to town and the entrance to the park. Very large sites.
