Only rest stops I ever wanted to stop at were in Kansas. Just very nicely built. However, no one ever puts one where I wanna stop, so I guess I never have to worry about baddies at them.

I guess it's time for me to share this post from a few years ago. It was reply when I asked about rest stops......
"I often travel alone. I have rules to reduce risk.
I try to park under a bright lights. I want anyone near my rig to be visible, and I don't want anyone to be able to see in at all.
I cover all RV windows with brown paper and blue masking tape, even the ones that are tinted--so no one can possibly see in at all, even with a flashlight. The blue tape works well.
I sleep lightly with my gun within reach. Occassionally, if I hear voices or a noise, I peak out through precut holes in the brown paper-little flaps I can lift up to see out, while no one can see in.
I try to enter the RV when no one is watching and use a flashlight to get ready for bed and turn it off as quickly as possible. I don't cook or do anything to draw attention to myself before I crash for the night. I cook, relax, or watch movies earlier in daylight. I sometimes take short naps during the day. If I seem to be under observation. I wait until it ends or else I move on to the next rest stop. I feel safest when moving. So when on the road, I try to either rest, or drive.
I travel with a 100 watt HAM radio with CB frequencies programmed and stay in touch with other drivers as I travel. If I need help I have a reliable means of calling for help.
I usually drive until very late at night--2-3am and I get up at 9am. No one is up this late. People tend to leave promply in the morning. I've never had problems with this strategy. Pan handlers are lazy and hang out during busier times of the day.
If I need a bathroom, I use fast food joints, or truck stops, and always carry my gun or guns.
I use the rest stops mostly to stretch for a few minutes and leave quickly."
There was a recent article by a Brit journalist where he said he felt much much safer walking in any American city than he did in London or Manchester.
My wife and I like to play the 'what if' game. What if there were criminals out there, and you didn't know exactly where?
Some days the bear eats you. What if you could change the odds?

We are so thankful that MN passed the Minnesota Citizens Personal Protection Act 2003. Criminals in MN have in the back of their heads that the person just may have a gun. I know many women, age 30-50, that have the permit and carry. This act, has been tested in court and thankfully, now conforms with some minor adjustments.
I love the fact that if my wife and kids are out and about, a criminal will always wonder if she just might blow his/her head clean off.... I pray to God this never happens, but in these times of so much widespread violent crime, we feel it is needed.
To the OP, we feel safer overnighting at WM, FJ,or other big box stores.
