Will be pulling 5er from B'ham to Asheville this weekend. Plan on taking I-59 to Chattanooga, then I-75 to I-40 thru Knoxville and down to Asheville. My only question is I-40 between Knoxville & Asheville. How steep and how long is the downhill section at the state line area. I have only traveled on I-24 near Monteagle as far as pulling over any mountainous terrain; so still apprehensive about pulling over any mountains. Appreciate any advice. ( I am pulling a 30' Crossroads Cruiser with a 5.7 hemi Dodge gasser ).

Knox to Ash is a piece of cake comapred to Monteagle. You'll probably ask... what mtns?"
by the way, I-40 is closed in Knoxville... you have to take 640 around.

If I-59 between B'ham and Fort Payne doesn't beat your rig apart, you should be fine. The detour around Knoxville is well marked. I-40 over the mountain is not all that bad. Just stay in the right lane with all the trucks. The speed limit for the trucks is 50mph. It hard to pass with all the curves. I just stay in the right lane. When you start down on the Carolina side, just hang back till all the trucks pass, then you can get back up to speed. There is some construction on I-40 thru Ashville.

It's a little late for this weekend but a good resource to determine steep and curvy highways is Mountain Directory East, www.mountaindirectory.com and its sister book Mountain Directory West.

So True. If you can do Monteagle, you can do I-40 with no problem.

Thanks for the good advice. I-59 is definitely in sorry shape; but we have traveled it several times. Hopefully, the rest of the ride should be a lot smoother. Again, thanks for the input.

40 is nice rolling hills much easier on your TV than 50 coming North from Gadsden.

Lots of folks take the "alternate route" (last time I was thru there, they had light-up signs telling you it's recommended) of I-81 up in to VA, then I77 back down into NC. May not work that good going to Asheville, since you'd be doubling back West, though. My last time thru, I chose 40 all the way, regretted it due to construction had it down to 1 lane, added almost 5 hours to the trip. Would have been way faster to go the 'long' way.
