My Mother says they have gotten so bad in CA where she still lives that they only had one cashier near the door with large lines.
Many people just put the stuff on the floor and left.
They are not that bad here yet but it's close.
You know, I think the guy that Coke fired for the new Formula Coke is the same guy that Sears hired that advised them to sell the catalog sales off and not go on the internet.

It's been that way at Sears here for years, but we have seen people take their stuff and walk out the door into the mall without paying for it. Don't know if mall security got them or not.

Try getting them to replace broken hand tools........it's near impossible anymore......
I took a broken ratchet in that was in very good condition other than the guts being broken.......the chrome was like new........they tried to hand me a niked and gouged and flaking chrome replacement.......I said no way.......had to stand there and hassle them for another one......said they had no more except for brand new.......I finally got a new one after standing there for 30 mintues......
How ironic - great thread. Late last fall our local Sears had a sale on Lawn Mowers. Our 12 year old John Deer had given up the ghost, so we bought a Honda Powered Sears, 21" Eazy Walk Behind mower. Three functions in one, side discharge, bagging, mulching. We put it away, and brought it out this spring to try it on the first cut of the year. Well the self propelled drive wheels, don't drive, the bagging feature doesn't bag. The grass gets hung up in the discharge duct, so the only option you have left is a push mower with side discharge that you have to rake up the grass.
I contacted Sears, - sorry, the unit is over the 30 day replacement warranty, take it to the service center. The service center tells me they can repair the drive assembly, but have no answer regarding the bagging feature. " We suggest you sell the unit, we can do nothing more for you". This mower has less than 10 hours of operation on it. I wrote the CEO, and got a reply similar to the answer from the service center.
After years of purchasing from Sears, they have got our last dollar, I am thinking of taking them to small claims court. I refuse to rake our lawns after each cutting.

Interesting pulione... I too have the same Honda lawnmower but so far mine has been working OK.
Update... A week has gone by and I have still not heard from the service manager "Barry" at the Mapleview mall in Burlington Ontario, that promised to call me.
I take care of 4 small properties and need the blower.
I'm wondering what I should do. Is small claims court the answer??
I sure wouldn't be be investing any money in this organization in the near future...LOL
Well I just wasted another hour of my time by going back to Sears to enquire about the blower.
I had the clerk and two more managers shuffling through cabinets and making phone calls. It appears the blower was never received at the service center. Amazing that this is the first I have heard of that reason.
I then asked for a refund or a new machine to end the fiasco. LOL, the managers said they didn't have the authority to do that and it was the Service departments responsibly. One of the managers said she would look into it and call me tomorrow. LOL again. How many times have I heard that "rubber stamp" line.
Note. For over 30 years I was in customer service for the major computer company. I would say that 90% of our service calls were fixed in 4 hours. Sear has been a complete let down. What a Mickey Mouse organization.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me. I found out right away that this lawn mower was a disaster. Amazingly the very same symptoms. Took it back with less than 15 minutes runtime on it. They didn't offer to replace it and if they would have I wouldn't. I just wanted my money back and guess what? They charged me a 15% restocking fee even though the mower wasn't operational.
I will never buy another item from Sears or Kmart. I mean NEVER.
Well I received my first phone call from a Sears rep minutes ago.
Now the story is that they have the Leaf Blower in the service dept and they are currently working on it as a priority. I was told that the service dept would call me later today to give me a status report.
