My family and I are taking our summer vacation to Mackinaw City in a few weeks. We've got reservations at the Mackinaw KOA and will be there for a week. Has anyone here stayed at the Mackinaw KOA and can you tell me your likes/dislikes? Pics?
Also, any attractions that we should or shouldn't do/see? Restaurants that we have to check out?
We plan on spending a day with the kids at a water park, as well as visit Mackinaw Island and then do some tubing down the Sturgeon river. Hope to squeeze in some serious relaxation too, but with three kids ya just never know. LOL!
Thanks in advance for the help!

The Mackinaw KOA is an older campground and as a result, the sites can get a little tight. Playground isn't that nice, pool is small but clean. We stay there every fall and always enjoy the area. If you turn right out of the camp and go to where the road looks like it ends (turns sharply left), go straight into a small beach area. Great place to sit on the sand and watch the sun set.
Above all...have fun!

DO the island tour!! A very unique experience, and kids will enjoy it too. Don't miss it.

i second that. Of all our vacations & camping, one of the days the kids enjoyed most was the day we rode our bikes around the Island. DS still talks about the mini-golf he got to play there -- it was all greens. Unique & NICE.

One thing that is a must. Take a day trip across the bridge to St. Ignace. Drive west on US 2 and keep going until you come across the dunes lining the road. Find a place to park along the road and find ytour spot in the sand on the beach. Take a picnic basket and spend the day. It's like being on the ocean; nice clean water, takes a while to get deep and the kids will love it. It is so relaxing and wonderful.
Also down in that area is Mystery Spot.

We have stayed at the Mackinaw KOA and it is quite alright. Nice shaded campgrounds with lots of trees and handy to the touristy stuff. Sites are a little tight but not so bad. We stayed there with a 37ft 5er and were just fine.

Sure hope you take bikes (or you can rent them on the Island). There is a trail from the KOA into town. If old enough, turn them loose on the Island bike trail. They can't get lost but it's nine miles around. Be sure to try out the Patsies at several restaurants; one of which is on the main street paralleling the water south of town. I think it's Mama's pizza parlor that has a Bridge Museum on the second floor with a video of how the bridge was built. Visit the fort. Learn the difference between how you say Mackinaw and Mackinac (hint: there is no difference. The English and French just couldn't spell it the same)
Sheplers is the best way to the Island. Food on the Island is expensive. You might want to take a cooler. Get rid of the kids and have a beer at the Pink Pony where the sailors stop after the Mac sailboat race. Rent a horse-drawn surrey and take a leisurely trip around the Island.
Visit the Fort and the building where the Doctor examined a soldiers stomach which would not heal and learned all about digestion.
Stay away from the Grand Hotel. Everything costs; including a walk along the porch.
For a real treat (still costs) have a sandwich at the outside restaurant across the street from the Hotel which overlooks the golf course.
That will take a couple of days.

When in St. Ignace, head West on US 2 (towards the sand beaches described by Sracraft Dad) and stop at Clydes for a great hamburger experience.
Have a great time.
