We are leaving for Alaska in July and being a news "junky" I was wondering if there is any public radio broadcast that far north.
Would a portable short wave model work? I am too cheap to go the sirus route. Thanks

Sure it would work. You may want to do some online research as to who and what is still broadcast on the HF bands. I'm pretty sure BBC still does.

In fact, most of the world's great short wave broadcasters are gone. They embraced the Internet and streaming audio. Only ones left, for the most part, are Pacific Rim and programs beamed to other parts of the world that you can occasionally get, but usually not well. CBC Canada also has left the short waves. You can find them on broadcast band, however, with their One and Two services of music and information. Our Public Broadcasting services do not show up on short wave. The most of what you hear loudly on short wave broadcast segements any more are the fundamentalist preachers.

Alaska is experimenting with a digital radio state-wide network. There are few receivers available to get that, however, and it is still just experimental.

Are there PBS stations that far north?

Answer 1: I do not know

Answer 2: http://www.pbs.org/stationfinder/index.html

Will A short wave radio work:

Answer 1: yes (Assuming, that is, that there is nothing wrong with the radio)

Answer 2: I do not know how much programming you will receive however

There is still a lot of programming on Short Wave.. However how much you enjoy it remains to be seen.. but if it works where you are now, it should work where you are going.. May or may not be able to pick up the same transmitters though.

Canada has their version of PBS and it generally is available to almost everyone. I have only found a few spots where I could not get them. But, I really get sick of their liberal slant on the news, so most of the time I simply turn the radio off. Might want to check out XM or Sirius radio and see if you can get reception in the far north?

When we drive Alaska, I carry a handheld VHF aircraft radio in case of emergency. It can broadcast on 121.5 mhz and will almost alway be able to contact someone. Not grerat to listen to though...

Just about every community in Alaska has at least one or two radio ststions. Also, Public Radio is rebroadcast via FM repeaters near local communities throughout the State. You should have no problems.

The local Juneau PBS Radio Station broadcasts on 3 different FM frequencies....each with a different format!

If you do go the Sirius way read this first. You wont get a signal all the time, and depending on how far north (and your equipment) you may not get a signal at all.

Greetings from a fellow NPR junkie and former public radio reporter. When I travel I listen to my favorite hometown 24-hour public radio news station on line. When I don't have regular Internet access, I download podcasts on my iPod. When I can't do either of the above ... I breathe into a paper bag. LOL!

BTW, Sirius is only about $12 a month. LOTS of NPR (she says, waving the drug under his nose).
