It appears the most direct route from custer to medora may have some steep grades and curves. Is that true? What is the best route?

US 85 should not be a problem. No big steep grades or curves to fret over.

Be sure to fuel up before leaving Belle Fourche. There is a good truck stop right on the north edge of town, where US 85 and US 212 cross.

Otherwise, you have a long, long ways with no services until reaching Bowman, ND.

One little town called Buffalo SD, but that is it. Virtually no services there.

A nice little state campground called Butte View Campground is just east of Bowman ND on highway US 12. Check in and pay on the honor system, great for just an overnight stop. Clean restrooms/shower areas last time I was there.

just take 385 north and get 85 north out of Spearfish.
as stated, get fuel at Belle Fourche... it's a long ways to the next place.
go on up and take a look at the north section of T. Roosevelt National Park.
Very pretty up there.

If you are golfers, don't miss Bully Pulpit GC in Medora.
