I can't seems to find any comments/feedback on Thousand Trails, Forest Lake (Advance) NC.
Anyone that has stayed, can you comment? It appears to be remote, is there a lot to do at the campground?
The CG is very nice. It has an adult pool, and spa. A family pool, tennis, and basketball courts. A lake to play in. It is very wooded, with large sites, clean bath houses and has a store, and small restaurant/snack bar/gameroom. For us. The only drawback, is location. It is not near the beach, or mountains.
If there were more Thousand Trail CGs in the NC, SC area. It could be worth joining for.
While I can't comment on the park itself, the previous poster is right in that it's in a dead zone as far as amenities and things to do.
If you want eats or gas, you'll have to drive several miles, though there is a new building going up at the intersection of 801/64 that has us locals dancing with speculation/anticipation (shows how slow it is around here ) It's a huge, barn-style building built in the post 'n beam style. Various rumors have it that it will be a gas station/convenience store/antique mart with an offering of diesel. Others say 'just antiques; maybe a restaurant' though there appears to be a huge underground storage tank sitting on the construction site right now. At the rate they're going, I don't think it will be complete til the fall.
A lot of travelers pick that 1000 Trails site because it is quiet and they don't mind the trek to Lexington/Mocksville/Hillsdale for supplies. Don't bother with Advance, there's only a couple of gas stations and a RR crossing.
Oh, and if you need a haircut, there is a lady who set up shop at the campground. She comes in on Saturdays to offer her services. I can attest that she does a good job And, right now gas prices are lower than average in the Mocksville area for some reason. I've been paying 3.89/gal for the last couple of weeks while everywhere else it's .10 more.
We like the CG and the area. Nearby (your definition of nearby may be tighter than ours) are some really good BBQ places, the Richard Childress NASCAR museum, the Childress Winery, Old Salem in Winston-Salem, the former RJ Reynolds Estate, etc. If you strike a wider arc, Charlotte is just a couple hours south. Yeah, the supermarket is 15 miles away, but you can always get lunch along the route if that's too much of a trip. (We like the Carolina Q BBQ place, just a mile or two east of the front gate.) One small caution - pick your site carefully if you don't want to spend a lot of time leveling. We saw a lot of folks jacked way up on blocks. It's a great CG for walking, not so much for biking if you have old knees like mine. Friendly, comfortable place to be.
When I was there about six weeks ago, the local seasonal campers bring their golf carts to race. This caused dust and noise into the early morning hours. As another poster stated most sites are very uneven. Tarheel BBQ less than an mile from the preserve entrance, serves a tasty meal.
