In July my son and I are planning to visit Mt. Mitchell, NC.
We will be using our PU and would like water and electricity at the campsite.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to good campgrounds in that area. We are considering but lack details on Davidson River, Lake Powhutan and Black Mt.

Try Tow River CG. Has all you need. Don't think Black Mountain does. Carolina Hemlock dosen't either.

Davidson River and Lake Powhatan are forest service cgs without hookups. Not sure, but I believe Black Mtn is also fs and probably doesn't have any hookups. FYI, Davidson River and Lake Powhatan are over 1 hour from Mt Mitchell. Toe River area is much closer, but I don't know about the cgs. Areas near Mt Mitchell are Spruce Pine, and Burnsville, NC. Marion is not too far, and several cg's there get good reviews. Asheville is about 1 hour away.

You may want to check out Buck Creek. It's a private CG just outside Marion NC just off Hwy 80. Very quiet place with a real swimmin' hole.

Also be sure to check the Blue Ridge Parkway website for updates. Last I heard the BRP was closed just south of Mount Mitchell and was planned to be that way for a quite a while.

The Black Mtn. campground does not have elec/water. It is a nice facility tho, located on the South Toe River.
Have driven thru Buck Creek in Marion (just down the mtn. from Mt. Mitchell).
Sites on a creek & they have a lighted driving range if you happen to be into golf!
You might be interested in Bear Den Campground off the Bl Ridge Pkway @ milepost 324. They definitely have elec/water. They are listed under Spruce Pine in the Trailer Life Directory.

I was going to suggest Bear Den. I stayed there for a week when I had my PU. My I had kids with me and they had a great time. Lots of places for day trips.

As others have said; Buck Creek is nice, but another one to look at is the brand new one that is at Tom Johnson Camping center in Marion.

Buck Creek is usually full and Tom Johnson's is anly a few miles straight down the road from it.

I have never camped there, since I live so close, but I have the maintenance done on my trailer ther, and was quite impressed with their new camping area with the full hook-ups.

It's roughly 30 miles from Mt Mitchell.

If you folks are hikers, there is a awesome trail that takes off from Black Mountain campground and goes to the top of Mt Mitchell (5 miles each way)
Also if you want a easier one, there is one that starts at the back of the picnic area just below the parking area at the top of Mt Mitchell and it goes over six, six thousand peaks. You can do a out and back on it as far as you want.

Yep, Mt. Mitchell SP is only accessible from the north side. The BRP is closed for the year south of MMSP due to a road collapse. So you'll want to stay somewhere in the Spruce Pine or Marion areas, rather than around Asheville. IIRC, the nearest access to the BRP on the north side of MMSP is NC 80, but it's sorta steep and twisty. Davidson River & Lake Powhatan would both involve a long, convoluted drive to get to MMSP.

Also check the state parks web site to be sure that the new observation deck on top of the mountain has been finished. It was under construction last time I visited, just before the BRP was closed.
