Your question has a "Depends" answer. It really depends on who the company uses to ship, who they use to broker and what agent is on at the border.
We ordered 2 generators fairly recently (within a year) and were charged Duty(4%) + GST on both. One had a much better brokerage rate than the other one. The first one we ordered racked up a $175 brokerage fee plus duty, gst and shipping. We probably should have bought that one locally.
In any event.. The person that talked about warranty is right. Warranty is only honored in the country of purchase.
I think if you look around, you will find the same deal or better from a distributor in Canada.
Maybe checkout some of the lesser known brands. Boily, Kipor ect...
Thanks for all the great replies, this is one topic that seemed to have little info till now!
I was listening to the radio today about how our 'prices' in Canada have stalled at about 18% over the same product in the US despite the equal currency. Now I do understand that there are other factors to create this difference, BUT I sure as heck cannot justify paying a 54% premium for the same genny here or from the States, even if I have to pay the associated 'fees' to get it here. Once I figure out the company ( Cabelas is back ordered and on for $1099) and the costs I will let all know!
Thanks again

As others have said it depends who it is being shipped with, I had a generator shipped from San Diego with DHL last October and paid the GST ($59.40 on $990.00) plus a $7.00 Brokerage Fee for a grand total of $66.40 Actual shipping costs were covered by the seller so I have no idea what that was.
