What are the campgrounds looking like with this fuel situation. Are they empty, same, full?
I know the streets around me have been vacant - you can throw a bowling ball down the road, and not hit a thing.
So I would appreciate some real time road reports.
I also heard a new word called - "STAYCATION". A lot of people are staying home this year.

I started checking the Corps of Engineers campgrounds and had a hard time finding ANYTHING that wasn't pretty much FULL. You can reserve sites there and people haven't slowed down doing that, at least not in Tennessee.

I have been traveling I-80 and I-29 in Nebraska over the past 2 months and have since a BIG increase in traffic of all kinds. Especially trucks. About 3 months ago they were going slow and very few. Now they all pass me and so to the A motor homes, C's and B's. Looks to me like most campgrounds I have passed are 1/2 or better filled.
So maybe more locals but people wisely are still using their investment and enjoying the good life. Just possibly closer to home.
Sure has not slowed the BASS Boats down either on the river or behind the $50,000 pickup pulling them!!!!
If there is more room all the better for us that still use thier rig.
There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

Have you tried to get a spot for the 4th of July weekend. Very full from my perspective. Like others, we are staying closer to home for the July 4 weekend, but that is mostly due to the time we have off work and not necessarily because of the gas prices.

Have traveled from Colorado up into WY, over to the Black Hills, across SD on I-90 and into northern Iowa over the past two weeks. In the traveled areas..Black Hills and along I-90, the campgrounds are nearly full by the next morning. The few times we've been off the beaten path, they have been 1/2 - 3/4 full. I'd be careful around high visit areas (such as the Black Hills) and high density times such as the 4th coming up. We always reserve a spot by 2 the same day, when on the road, and have done fine, but you may want to plan further ahead for those especially if you combine them..high density area, high density time.

It's Grand Central Station at the park I'm in.
6-5'ers with big honkin diesel TV's pulled in yesterday and pulled out this morning and 4 more pulled right in. Certainly not slow here!:
I think it's like everthing else that has happened over the years.
Wasn't it just about a year ago that even the thought of $3.00 a gallon and everyone freaked. They sat home with the oh poor me, what 'are' we going to do. We can't afford to go anywhere.
Then after a few months it's 'acceptance time' and life goes on.
That is what will happen this go around too. People with tight budgets will just cut back on something. Trust me driving is not going to be the first choice of where they are going to cut back, it never has and never will.
BTW. Does a 5'er hold 'more' people than a TT?
I swear each one that pulled in had about 10 people in them.

It seems to be busy in the state parks and GA power lakes close to our home. Camping close and trying to save for our trip to Disney this September.

I must be in a different world. I can't speak for the federal or state campgrounds, we're mostly private campgrounds and some city & county parks. I'm in the Black Hills now at the "Resort at Palmer's Gulch" also called "KOA at Hill City". It is Sunday morning (6/22/2008) and there are lots of empty spaces. The non-resort type campgrounds have a higher percentage of vacancies - even to the point of negotiating camping fees (i.e. extra person fee is waived). This has been my experience in my travels over the last month. Only Cherry Hill in DC over the Memorial Day weekend with the Rolling thunder was close to capacity and we did see a few empty sites there as well (may have been reserved with a no-show). We're traveling with no reservations and have not had a problem. HOWEVER, I would still get a reservation over the major holiday weekends - I have one for the 4th.

We were at our favorite campground in Lancaster County, PA over Memorial Day weekend and there were a few open sites. Last year, it was full. Actually, the whole area seemed less crazy this year. There were fewer lines at restaurants, shops and attractions.
