If they outlaw talking on the phone without hands free devices then why don't they outlaw talking on the CB radio while driving.
It's not talking on the phone while using only one hand that is a problem. It's getting so wrapped up in the conversation and becoming obliviuos to everything else around you.

I believe this has more to do with attorneys than politicians. Several years back I remember a newspaper article that described an accident, citation was inattentive driving, caused by a driver reading the newspaper. The defence attorney got the culprit off because there was no law specifically prohibiting reading while driving. Common sense tells me that reading, looking at maps, talking on the cell, using GPS, etc all are to be done while stopped if you are alone, or done by my DW who is the world's geatest copilot. Stupid laws are usually put in place due to some stupid person doing something stupid. My favorite saying, You can't fix stupid.

It's kinda like hard hats on construction jobs. The only person that really needs a hard hat is the one that will be hit on the head from a falling object.
Which person will it be???
chevman retired construction worker that didn't like hard hats either (BUT) did wear one

I get cell calls from folks driving and almost always miss some of the words from them. Why would this be good for business?? I think cell phones are awesome but common sense is also awesome. chevman

If needed - then buy an earpiece and go hands free. Only those under 18 cannot even do it hands free but over 18 - as long as your not holding the cell phone to your ear you can still do your business.
If you can't follow the law then don't complain about the tickets.
I have a feeling this will be carefully watched by the CHP and all police.
I for one am glad - I'm sick and tired of being stuck behind weavers, drivers going WAY too slow, inattention at signals and the myriad other things only to pass them and find they are too busy talking on the phone to pay attention to their driving.

And now days the only hands free device for cell phones is those dang bluetooth things that everybody has hanging from their ear. With my hearing, I cannot use one, and if I am trying to talk to someone who has one, it is so bad I might as well not be on the phone. Guess I'll simply turn my phone off. Sure will be glad when i can retire and not have to have a cell phone for work!

I've seen a couple of after market Blue tooth devices that do not require a ear piece, some mount on dash boards. WM's has a couple in their Electronics Dept.

Frankly, I am glad to see such laws and while I believe that ANY phone usage in a moving vehicle is distracting to the driver and dangerous to other drivers, it will be a fine start at ridding the roads of this nuisance. No more having to look at some ditz pulling a bonehead stunt with a phone stuck in their ear? I'm all for it--now let's get the law in all 50!
