joshjack - that sounds pretty cool. Is the wifi app called Jailbreak or is that an enabler? If not do you know the name? I was going to do as a coworker does - simply pop out the SIM and put it in my Razr as needed. My big need is email which the full Exchange support will handle so tethering will become less of a need for me.

Jailbreak is an enabler that allows 3rd party applications on the iPhone. You need it to install the WiFi AP tools. I recommend the ZiPhone jailbreak package. The best tutorial I've found for doing the WiFi tether is here:Share iPhone's internet connection. However the original tutorial is located at: Creations.net Tutorial.
Note: While I have Jailbroken my iPhone I never got around to setting this up myself. Since I've sold my iPhone on ebay in anticipation of the 3G I can't offer any first hand support but I'm happy to try to answer questions.

Actually you can restore your phone to the original software anytime. Updates are a little trickier since you need to wait for an updated Jailbreak before updating but the upcoming 2.0 firmware has been available to developers for a while (whereas previous versions were not provided to developers before public release) so an updated jailbreak should come out at the same time.
As for bricking the iPhone - this was a concern early on but the current software packages out there are tested and proven. Very low risk.
To the OP ... If you were happy with ATT servicing before you will find it has improved some in the last year or two. Service on the phone and 3g(HSDPA) networks are dependent on where you are same as verizon and its service and Evdo (3g data) network.

Because I work in the DC/Balto. corridor, I would have 3G available there out of the box. In my home area about 50 miles west of Balto/DC, 3G is supposed to be on line by the end of the July.
There are some areas around here up in the mountains that only have Verizon service. Because we mountain bike and camp in some of these areas, I am still considering Verizon too. Particularly for safety reasons when biking etc.
I looked at the LG Voyager, seems like a good phone, not as "cool" as the iphone, but not bad either, it would do the job on the Verizon network. It also has a real keypad which is a big plus in my book. It also seems to be a better "phone" from the reviews I have read and that is important to me.
Even though I am fairly "tech savvy" this whole cellphone thing makes my head spin. I swear I think you need a lawyer when you walk into one of these stores to figure out which plan/features to get. Plus whenever I go into a store they are so busy you feel like you in a herd of cattle. Especially the Verizon stores...AT&T usual is not as busy. At least not until July 11th!
For those of you with Verizon, do any of you access the web? What phone do you use and how do you like it? I would like web access to check my gmail and keep up with news and such when I am on the road/camping. I don't need (I guess you would call) push/POP email such as on a smartphone (I guess).
Of course, I still love the iphone. PERFECT WORLD: CDMA iphone! I'll bet it happens in a couple of years. Til then, still trying to figure it out!
Would be interested on some Verizon web phones/experiences.
Thanks

Why you would want to blow your dough on an I-Phone I don't know.. but it appears you do, so given that if you want to use an I-Phone you currently have to use a GSM network, cause a G3 phone won't work on a non GSM network unless it is multi-format capable (And I do not think the I-Phone is)
And I do not yet know if they have released the I-phone from the AT&T network lock they factory programmed in the original ones (I know hackers have hacked it to unlock it) NOTE: when I say I do not know.. I mean I have no interest in researching and thus have not researched and do not know, they may have, or not, I not only don't know.. I don't care.
But the bottom line is this: If you want to use an I-Phone. then yes, AT&T is a must

Maybe you should have taken long enough to research and find out that it's 3G and not G3...
There's no advantage to CDMA over GSM, just different approaches. Competing networks all over the world use both.
