Don't feel bad. I picked up my first 5'er on Thursday. We decided to stop on the way home and try it out...... I found out real quick the importance of letting the tailgate down. I was fortunate that the fellow camping next door was a seasoned veteran and offered to help (as I was too embarassed). He said, "Well son you know I've been doin' this for years and two months ago I crushed the rails on my truck." He helped, all that was hurt was my pride, TH.

RV means "Really Valuable". A small mistake can cost lots. Now that you learned from 1 to 5, there is always numbers 6 to 100. Which include dropping on the bed rails, lower tv antenna, and putting up the stairs, folding in the handrail, unplugging something before pulling out, rolling over you wheel chocks, forgetting to tie the bikes on the rack. And the list goes on. And then there are the driving/backing issues, too. After that there is the stuff just happens category.

Picked up my first fiver today....banged my head twice. Took me FOREVER to back it into the storage space. I'm sure a few of those "gotchas" are just around the corner!

Wow! I'm glad that NOTHING like that has ever happened to me... I could pretty much match you problem for problem, but then again I guess that is the price you sometimes pay to be able to enjoy nature and sights that you'd never normally see. It's all worth it in the long run.

And now for the capper to the story. All this was while my daughter and grandkids were camping out using my 5ver to celebrate the end of the school year. I'm still going to work every day and not having any of the fun. Lord knows how many "mistakes" I might have made if I had been there and had the time to really concentrate on it
Lets just say I have been doing my part to help keep Camping World and RV mechanics in business during some really trying times for the industry. Tomorrow I'm gonna change the fuel filter in my diesel truck by myself. So if Y'all see a cloud of smoke in North Texas,,, walk, do not run to the nearest exit.
Famous redneck last words. "Hey Honey...watch this !".
I feel I must make this addition. Everything that happened could have been avoided by following (and using) a good checklist. If I had not gotten in a hurry...

If anybody tells you that they haven't made most if not all of the mistakes that you listed here, WATCH THEM because they will lie to you about something else.

Now about the rain. I live in central Texas ( Belton ) and I remember hearing about rain when I was a little kid and I sure would like to get a chance to see some.

One thing that I noticed a lot of people people have problems with is the on/off switch. It always seems to be in the wrong position. After you check everything else then you find it to be the problem.

I have a L O N G list of things to do when I get to a campground or get home and one for when I am leaving. Try to stick to this list.

A friend stopped overnight at a campground and only unlocked and raised his 5th wheel off the hitch just enough to level it. The next morning he lowered the trailer onto the hitch, then his wife said something and most of you know what happened next. He didn't lock his hitch. Result $8,000 damage to the truck and trailer. Be REAL ANAL and check everything twice.

If you do not know about "tail swing" on the fiver there could be another $$ lesson to be learned. I won't go into great detail on this but believe me, it is not the best way to remodel the rear cap of your trailer. We have all done,or come close to doing all those tricks. It's just part of the "experience"
Enjoy the the life it is the greatest!!

OK, I admit it. I am a stubborn, cranky old SOB who just cannot seem to follow directions. So I am making all the mistakes one-at-a-time. Some of them are fairly expensive. I made a few close call ones early on, but lately my altzheimer's seems to be working overtime. The first few when getting to know a fifth-wheeler were of the "almost" brand. Almost forgot to lower the tailgate and saw it just in time. Noticed that a fifth wheel tracks to the inside of a turn more than a pull-behind and stopped just before dropping an axle into a ditch. My helper hollered at me before I almost pulled away with the umbilical still plugged in. Now I have graduated to the bigger class of errors
1. figured the brake controller that came with my "new-to-me" truck was good enough. Heck it was an almost dead copy of one my Dad had back in the 70's. It led to numbers 2 and 3 below.
2. The Brake controller didn't warn me when the connector fell out and I had to stop the rig using only the truck brakes from highway speed.
3. The Brake controller didn't warn me when the connector fell out and by the time I got stopped the connector and cable had undergone some modifications.
Now I can spell "Prodigy" and I have a new connector and cable.
4. Nobody told me that an awning was supposed to be retracted when it rains. In this part of Texas a rain as almost always preceeded by a 5 to 10 minute wind event. It is generally strong enough to re-arrange patio furniture (the iron kind). Seems to have had an effect on the awning as well. I'm not sure yet, but I smell $$.
5. Trying to hook-up by raising the nose of the 5ver to match the hitch requires that you raise the rear stabilizers first. Well I know that... now. But I didn't know it yesterday. They kinda got a kink in them. And I thought the front jacks were moving a bit slow.. oh nevermind I guess I was lucky that the front jacks were stronger than the stabilizers.
So I know that none of these errors are new, but I am trying for the World's record error-in-a-row / different error every day blue ribbon champion of the universe title.
Gotta go now so I can think of a new one. I almost had one, but moved my foot just before uncapping the sewer conn so I could hook-up the hose. There was about a cupful of strange fluid there. Missed me by...That Much.

Please keep it up!! I'm writing as fast as I can!! won't have my first RV for a while yet... ordering it monday...so maybe I can make a cheat sheet of misq's...

Gonna need it I can see that...

Trip...newby of the first order
