I resisted buying one until just before the last trip. I love it, if only for the ability to find supermarkets, or even know how far the next rest area is. The mapping ability is great too but only when used in conjunction with a paper map.
I bought the garmin nuvi 350 from amazon for 199.
My question is:
What is your favorite method for mounting the unit on the dash etc...
Since I got it the day before I left I rigged up a beanbag using a 32 oz bag of beans stuffed in a ditty bag. I closed the neck of the ditty bag around the suction base of the winshield mount and duct taped it in place. I put it on top of some rubber shelf liner on top of the dash. It worked well for a last minute quick fix although I found I had to move it back in position after an area of bumpy roads -- it would slide down the armour all covered dash toward the window. I then only used the garmin on battery power when in the tow.
I looked in walmart and was shocked to find the friction mount is 39 bucks, a bit too much for me. Ebay has some for sale and also a vent mount? What is the best? Has anyone made their own?

We use the dash/beanbag like mount friction. It is black, round with a rubber inside to mount gps to and bean bag bottom. It works great! Does not slide and does not damage the dash. We found it on clearance at Target.

Greetings...and for what it's worth...we bought a Magellan...comes with one mount which we did not like and we have a car as well as our PW...checked online and another mount cost $20.00 plus tax and $25.00 to ship it...went to the dollar store and bought 2 upright clearview picture frames for a $1.50...the base of these frames is on an angle...velcroed the base to the dash and the GPS to the upright part of the frame...did the same in both vehicles so the GPS is interchangeable. Total cost for the frames and the velcro about $5.00...will do us for now...may see somebody else's ideas on our travels. Drive Safe...Bob

The little suction cup thingy will leave a round mark on your windshield.
Last year I took a 3 or 4 inch piece of industrial strength velcro and put a piece on the dashboard (after positioning the Garmin unit at the most favorable place for both the driver and passenger to view and program) and then put Velcro on the bottom.
Husband said "that will not hold it" but after 12 months it has never fallen and we have traveled over some good bumpy roads!
Cost about $3.00

Tried the suction cup method and it would not hold. Something about that Florida sun last winter. Opted for a bean-bag mount. Found an OEM Garmin on Amazon dot com for about $25 delivered. Am still going to look at a vent mount though. The vent mount would put it at a level that I can see through the bifocal without having to move my head (hate it when you get old).
Whatever method is selected, a GPS can pay for itself in cutting down all that driving around trying to find something.

The friction mount bean bag works great and the GPS can be transferred easily from vehicle to vehicle. The GPS can also be removed and placed on the floor or under the seat to prevent roving eyes spotting it for purposes of theft. The suction cup round spot on the windshield is used by the bad guys - they know you have a GPS that you have hidden some place. Might end up with a knocked out window even though you removed the GPS. JMO>
