I have a 2007 Winnebago "Voyage" with the "Workhorse" engine. The coach was just purchased in March and has about 2300 miles. I'm leaving in a couple of weeks for a long trip and want to change the oil before I go. Would it be wise to change to synthetic oil now or wait for another oil change?

Thank you in advance,

Not knowing the manufacturing date, I would change the oil. I also have a WH engine and use Mobil 1 synthetic. I tend to err on the side of caution with my motorhome since it doesn't get driven as regularily as my commuter / everyday car.

Also, any engine deposits (metal shavings, etc..) that result from the first few thousand miles are flushed in the first change. I think the first oil change is very important.

Regards...

I would suggest that you wait until you have at least 8,000+ miles on it to change to synthetic. Give that WH engine more time to break in. Synthetic is believed to give better protection from wear and so it takes longer to break in using it. I waited until I had 12,000 miles on my WH and then went to Mobil 1. Never used a quart of oil in 24,000 miles that I owned it.

Well, it looks like you posted this subject twice in the same Class A forum, and here is what I said on your other Synthetic post:

I changed my dyno oil to Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic at 5,000 miles and feel good about it. It has 15,000 miles now on it.

I believe (and many others) that waiting until an engine has "so many miles" on it before switching is an old wives tale. In my Workhorse manual, there is no mention of sythetic vs. dyno oil...just make sure you use some that is API rated.

I have used Synthetic oil in all my vehicles and have found the oil to work great. On the last motorhome !984 chevy, I change the oil at the first change along with the rear end gear oil and tranny fluid, sold it at 250,000miles and its still going. Found the Harley ran about 15-20 degrees cooler with the synthetic oil.

No need to wait. If you intend on using SYN oils...switch now.

Be sure to take an extra quart with you too.

The design and manufacturing proccess used in modern engines eliminates the need for long term break-in. As long as the oil you put in meets the API standards and weight reccomendation in the owners manual, you'll be fine.

I changed both my Vortec engines (GM 8.1 in the RV, and GM 4.8 in my Siverado) to Mobil 1 5w-30 at the first change. Oil consumption on the 8.1 dropped to about 1qt per 3,000 miles, and the 4.8 uses no oil.

My Corvette came from the factory with Mobile 1. Never used any oil.

I have a new motorhome on the Workhorse UFO chasis, and it has 2000 miles on it. I called Workhorse about changing to synthetic oil, and they said there was no problems with warranty using synthetic, but once you switch they do not want you to change back.

Gas engines are usually in the front. Synthetics run cooler. Fan comes on less. Running on Synthetic = quieter ride. Enough for me.
