I have been reading this forum for two months now and have found great deal of information!
I have a 1990 Starcraft pop up and have been looking at different manufactures to buy a new or used hi-wall. Do units depreciate similarly to cars, or do they hold their value better?
How can I find out if a used unit price is a fair price?

Thanks for your help,
George

www.nadaguides.com

it's a "guide"

if you're a buyer, it tells you the most you should pay, so you shoot for less.

if you're a seller, it gives you something on paper to justify your price "retail value is $7500, will sell for $6800"

There are times of the year when selling is hot and you can get more for your money. So depreciation isn't just a function of time. Depreciation is probably worse now with gas prices though. Like cars, if you buy used at a good value relative to the nada guide, you'll do ok. If you buy new, expect a hit. If you get what you can afford and drive a hard bargain, you'll do fine. You can't put a price on the experiences.

My guess is that your unit is so old that you probably won't be able to find "comparison" prices that are too meaningful. However, right now is a good time to sell it. You should be able to get top dollar at the moment.

Keep in mind that in PA tent trailers are seasonal. Here in California people use them 12 months a year, so watch the ads for older units in your area to get an idea of asking prices. I wouldn't worry much about brands, the main thing on an 18 year old unit will be condition -- leaks, canvas, whether appliances work, etc.

Good luck with it.

I think they depreciate up to a point, and it all depends upon how well they are maintained. I say up to a point, because a good vintage RV that is in pristine condition can cost more than a brand new one!

It all boils down to how much someone is willing to pay and what it's worth to them. Dealers may establish a sale price, but they also know if the unit sits on the lot, they're loosing money. So, a little bartering on a used unit may return very desirable results for the purchaser.

Good luck!

Check www.craigslist.org and see what they are selling for in your area, that'll give you an idea on what to ask

Thanks for all of the replys.
I did not pay much for my pop up and will not be trading it in. The roof leaked last winter and the canvas is stained. It's not worth putting any money in to it. The wife and I are going to check out a 3612 Centennial.
Thanks again:
George

We paid $2000 for our PU several years ago. In the past year we have paid $1600 to replace the roof and canvas. Now we have a PU that we have paid $3600 for that will last us for years. We had several "repairmen/salesmen" tell us that it was not worth repairing. Well, we probably won't be able to sell it for $4000, but then if gas keeps going up and people keep looking for smaller campers then we may. What we are looking at is a PU that is repaired as opposed to payments for the next five years. I would definitely repair it again before putting $10,000 into a new one.
