I have a 1992 bounder with a ford 460.Last summer after driving for about 5 hours then stopping to get gas the engine sputtered and backfired when I tried to get back up on the hwy.Once I got to fwy speed it ran like a top. Then, when I got off the hwy and into city traffic it began sputtering and backfiring and stalled. I could restart but when I pushed on the accelerator it would die again. Several people I spoke to thought it could be the spark plug wires so I had the dealership replace the wires and any other components they thought could be the culprit. They could not recreate the problem and it ran fine on other shorter trips. The dealership also fixed the dash air which was not operating. Well, I left Friday for a trip to the mountains with the family and 1 mile into the trip the A/C fan stopped working. Thirty five miles into the trip we hit some traffic and it started sputtering and backfiring and stalling on the Fwy. I called a tow truck and took it to the nearest ford dealer. They spent part of yesterday trying to figure it out with no luck.
I am planning a longer trip this summer and really want this to be fixed. Any ideas anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Can't say about A/C.
On engine, if only happens when hot, are you using gas with booze in it? Could be vapor lock. Try to avoid ethanol if possible. Only other idea I have is maybe fuel filter or fuel pump? Maybe?
Just my guessing.

I agree with the vapor lock diagnosis. Sounds like the classic symptoms. Fuel gets too hot and vaporizes before it gets to the carb. I had to install a secondary electric fuel pump on my old Dodge MH many years ago for this reason.

The problem is in the fuel. I would start with the fuel filter replacement if the existing filter has 8,0000 miles on it or more. Sure sounds like a zapor lock to me as mentioned above. But if you can check the fuel pressure with a gage when the problem starts. I know not easy going down the road, but it could also be the fuel pump breaking down when it gets hot. Did you by any chance have the fault codes check on the OBA. Bill

Do a search and you'll find hundreds of posts regarding the fuel pump on a f53 with 460........

Absolutely it is the fuel pump! It was a well known design problem in the '90's. I had the problem, for a couple of years, with my 1992 F53 chassis after warranty. Finally had it changed in 1997 and no problems afterwards.

Fuel pump. Had same problem on our 1996 Bounder Ford. Alway happened when driving for a while in hot weather. Tank has to be dropped. We had it done in Fl at a small shop for about $800.

Too bad you didn't fix it yourself.......the pump is only about $175.00.......you paid over $600 in labor....

Just another little note. If it is the fuel pump, put on an after market, in line, Leave the one in tank. You save Mucho $$$$$$. Just make sure its the same pressure ratings. JMadditional 2 Cents Bill

Yes. This can be done in several hours of easy work and about $125. Great solution.
