Has anyone stayed at Hunting Island? If so any information would be appreciated. Pictures of the area would be great. We are planning on taking a trip there in late September.

Thanks

I love it there. We have been twice. I have pics of the campground and beach in my profile of our first trip there at Christmas.

Great place, but not in hot weather. Bugs are bad!! Beach has been rebuilt in the past few years and not nearly as charming as it was. But this was necessary because the nor'easters would rip bach and island to shreds after blowing a few days. Check out the lighthouse. Cast iron!! Make sure you have all the things you will need. It is a pretty long drive back to Beaufort and the nearest store.
Crabbing is good out near the rocks at the pier.

I absolutely love this park. I wish I could tell you otherwise to keep you and everyone away. But the place is very beautiful and peaceful and I now realize why it stays booked and booked so early.

Here is site no 10. Huge site. Lots of room all around. Bathhouse next door. Very convenient.

The wildlife will come right up to you.

Be sure to bring all groceries and necessities with you. A long trip back to the nearest stores. The bugs will be bad so bring some spray and a screen room if you can. But well worth it. The front section of the park is beautiful. The back section not so much. That is where the bugs will be the worst. You get no breeze from the ocean in the back sections. Hope you have a great time.

I agree with fourcamping except I like it "in the back". More peaceful and private.
The pictures he posted give a very good picture of the upfront campsites.

Horsedoc,
If you bike down the beach at low tide, between the campground beach and the public beach, you will find the beachfront that you remember from before the work on the beach.
I think the beach is better without the stumps you couldn't see at high tide.
One more week!!!

It is a great place.
It is the only place I have ever been to where I saw a Painted Bunting in the tropical forest.

Hunting Island is surprisingly "tropical", especially the "jungle" area past the lighthouse and inland a bit. As a matter of fact, the area was used in the Viet Nam war scenes in the movie Forrest Gump. What we like to do is to ride our bikes along the beach (very hard-packed sand during low tide) in the direction of the lighthouse. In the cabin area, turn inland and ride back to the campground through the jungle. For northerners like us, it's almost as good as going to the West Indies!
