Just got a call from the Cummins service center. The PC board was bad; total cost for parts, labor, and tax is about $440.
The Cummins service center guys were great. They had it diagnosed and fixed within two hours this morning. Sure beats the early July estimate our local RV shop (and closest Onan service center) gave me, just to bring it in. All in all, well worth the extra 20 miles of driving.

Cris, Dunno if this will do you any good, but I was told by Cummins - Onan that the warranty on my 2.8 was '2 years parts and labor, third year major parts only'. Sounds like a pretty major part to me. You might want to check your unit's in-service date....

Don't want to hijack your thread, but I have a similar issue on my old Onan 4K.
Starts pretty well while holding down start button, and manually holding choke lever open. If I let go of either it dies.
I find that I can get it to run for a few minutes after starting by forcing the throttle open by hand. After a about 5 minutes it runs just fine.
Subsequent starts work just fine with no "assistance".
After it sits for a day or 2, its back to square 1.
I think I may need a tune up or new plugs, but have dreaded having to 'drop' the engine to get to the backside.

My generator had the same issue before I had this latest trouble. I had to start it outside on the generator and "assist" by pulling the throttle open a bit. It would then run fine and then I could restart it inside on the control panel.
Solution: I adjusted the choke a little to "rev" up the engine a bit. Sounds like you just need to adjust the choke.
Still trying to determine why mine won't run when I release the start button.

I just had the PC board replaced in my 4kw Onan and was just within the 2 year period. The PC board is not a major component covered in year 3.
Please be careful manually revving the genset, voltage climbs rapidly with RPM and so does hZ, at least for older units like our BFA which is mechanically governed with no logic board. RPM stays constant or very close to it and the controls open the throttle to match load.
LeRoys - if you have a BFA like we do, it's tough to get the choke coil to work over a range of ambient temperatures. Rich enough for winter, it'll choke itself out in summer. Lean enough for summer and won't fire in winter unless I help the choke to close a little. If you get any surging, include a new governor spring in your parts run. Cummins/ONAN on 50th Street in Tampa always had whatever I wanted for ours, including the service manual. I can get at both plugs on the BFA without removing it. Maybe yours is a different model since ours sits on its own tray and slides sideways to come out. Weighs nearly 250#. The access door is big, 23" high and 33" along the side of the coach. If you need to drop it, some of the guys have invested in a motorcycle jack or a transmission jack or transmission adapter for a floor jack.
How do you adjust rich/lean? Just the "elevation" selector? I have always had to manually hold down the little brass choke lever to get it to start, well at least last 2 years.
I'll try again to see if I can get to the back of it, and check the model # again when I get to it.
