We're getting ready for our first dry camping experience over the 4th. Yesterday the dilemma was the 6 volt batteries at COSTCO. Thank you all. Got that problem resolved. Well, we've purchased them.

Today, started up our new Yamaha 2400 genny. Won't run the air. Start with fan, then add the air and genny goes to overload. I plan to do a ton of reading on this forum to try and solve the problem, but wondered if any of you experienced people have experienced this problem and resolved it.

See trailer in signature. One A/C at 13,500. I'm a wreck over this.

Thanks in advance for any input. Honestly, without your past help, don't know where we'd be.

If your converter is putting a heavy charge to the batteries, that is a large load on the generator.

The refrigerator is probably switching to AC mode, and that is an additional load.

Try turning off the breakers to those two items and see if that helps.

You should select gas mode for the reefer so it doesn't add to the power load. And you can probably turn the converter breaker back on AFTER the A/C compressor is running.

Ditto!
The A/C will draw more than the 13,500 at start up, but the genset should hold that once the starting capacitor has kicked off.

Cut everything else off....and there is bound to be additional loads that you hadn't thought about. Once the A/C load has settled, you can try adding a few small loads, but you may not be able to do much....there is a reason that most of the Motorhomes have 4000 watt gensets. There is a big difference between the 2400 and the 4000. You may want to see about getting an additional genset, and increase your available load.

Our Honda eu2000 won't run our AC, although there has been many threads on the forum about this topic. Lots of people seem to get theres to work though, shut everything off you can. I also think it depends on altitude but not sure about this.

outdoorlovers:

We also have the Yamaha EF2400is. We also have a 13,500 BTU A/C unit on our 5er. We have not had any issues starting / running the A/C with our gen. One thing you can try is to make sure all loads are off when you start the gen, then set the temp on the A/C at the present temp in the coach. Reduce the A/C set point say 1 or 2 degrees and see what happens. As others have said, the load is highest when the A/C unit initially kicks in. The A/C unit in opur 5er is a high efficiency unit.

We are able to run our A/C unit off a 15 amp houshold circuit without tripping the circuit breaker. I can trip the circuit breaker if I also turn on the vacuum cleaner inside the 5er when the A/C unit is running. The circuit breaker on the gen is 20 amp adn can take higher loading.

...good luck...

You are running it to close. What kind of camping are you doing when everything must be turned off in order to run the AC? Not for me. You need a bigger genny to do what you want in this case. In an emergency to run the AC with your setup would work with everything off, but honestly for general camping that setup would be no fun.

A little follow-up: Ran the a/c at a FHU site Fri, Sat, Sun. Before we left today, ran on genny and turn on A/C. Ran beautifully. Maybe we just needed to really run the A/C and loosen things up a bit??

Also be sure the humidity switch on the refer is turned off as well as your electric on the water heater if you have that option.

Ga wire should be 12 at the VERY minimum... 2400 watt genset is only 20amps max starting capacity... the a/c probably pulls 12-16 continuously running...at start up it's greater than that... shut everything down, start your a/c, let it run about 10 min to build up the head pressure and equalize and then turn your fridge on.. your fridge and a/c is probably max... a hair-dryer or toaster will probably blow it... I've seen hairdryers that pull 1200 watts. Also, make sure the breaker you have connected to the a/c is at least 20 amp with 12 ga wire... 14 ga wire is a max of 15 amp breaker. Shorter distances in wire will help also.

As someone said the Converter was likely sucking down the watts

I have two converters on my coach.. On (Primary) can suck a thousand watts all by it's lonesome, the other can suck even more if I let it (It is throttled to the same thousand)
