I hope this forum is ok for this question. I am new to rv'ing. I have a 31 foot 5th wheel. My wife wants to bring her scooter when we go to Arizona for the winter. South Dakota winters are just too tuff on us anymore. I have seen a receiver that bolts around the rear bumper of a camper or 5th wheel. The receiver itself is very heavy duty but still don't know if rear 5th wheel bumpers are strong enough. I want to get a carrier that plugs in to the receiver to put her scooter on. It's a 50cc and it ways about 200 pounds. Would appreciate someone with experience give me recommendation. I see lots of them say not for back of campers. I guess mainly they are for back of pickups. Thanks in advance.

I would NOT carry 200lbs on that bumper. If you know of a welder in your area I'm sure they can fabricate something strong to connect to the frame of the trailer. But those bumpers barely carry bicycles.

When we had our old trailer, I made up a reciever hitch for the rear of it. Worked great.

I am gonna do the same thing you want to do. But right now i don't think the bumper is strong enough for a clamp on receiver hitch. I have a bolt on hitch receiver and carry four bicycles. The bumper flexes and twists. Depends what camper you have. But my rear bumper is made of 4"sq thin wall tubing. Welded to frame only along inside were frame and bumper meet. In the future i am going to get a 4" thicker wall tube and beef up the mounting to the frame. Then place two Clamp on receivers and make a moped slide on/slide off platform. My manual says 200 pounds on bumper is ok. But mounting it so it don't twist is the problem. Here is my mount for my bikes(see link). It holds 4 bycicles(100lbs?) and myself(160). And with bouncing i can see twisting. It is fine. Just would make me more nervous that i have more expensive machine back there. SO i want to beef up my bumper a a bit first.

I would personally be very leery about putting much weight on those thin skinned stinky slinky carriers. I think they are fine for carrying the sewer hose and 1 or 2 coats of paint, but would not trust them to carry much more than what is on them from the factory. These are thin enough that they may well rust out in under 15 years or so (my Dad's did!), so I wouldn't put much of value on them.

Well I guess you convinced me. I will have a professional weld a hitch to the back then. Thanks

Evidently you have not witnessed a camper going over a railroad track with just as little as a bicycle. The sling shot effect is tremendous and have heard horror stories of people loosing their stuff from back of camper and not even know it, and not realizing the danger you are placing on people following you. If I did go this route I would install some type of camera so I could at least monitor rear of camper.

So then is there anyway to safely carry a 190 pound moped when pulling a 5th wheel. Has to be. Don't really want it on the front but maybe the only way.

you can carry it on the back if your hitch is of good quaility. just be sure the moped is secured with good tie downs. i have carried bikes all over the country and have never lost any. i always do a walk around every time i stop

RGordon is right on the money. I recently put a Yakima 2 bike rack on my rear bumper. I went through all of the tying down and added some extra tiedowns to the rig. I threaded a security cable/lock through both bikes. After hitting a railroad crossing in South Georgia the only think holding the bikes on the rack was the additional security cable. The receiver I bolted to the 4 x 4 bumper was fine. I checked the welds throughout the trip but I also had probably 65 pounds of bikes. I cannot imagine 200 pounds unless you have a very good welder do a lot of reinforcing of the bumper/receiver to the I-beams. I always slow down for rr crossings but this one sneaked up on me. I got away lucky.
