Hi there DW and I were camping this last weekend in the Central Valley of California. It was pretty toasty weekend! We are thinking that it might eventually be a good idea for us to install a second roof Air conditioner in our 2006 Keystone Cougar. We are wondering if anyone out there has installed a second AC unit in their Fivers? We do have an exhaust vent in our Bedroom area, but it is not over the bed. So, we are wondering if anyone has tackled this project? Did you place the AC in place of the vent fan or did you cut a new hole in the ceiling of the RV. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
We haven't bought anything yet, but we are just testing the waters a little. Let us know. Thanks! - Eric -

You might want to ensure the 5er is wired and ready for a A/C unit. I would advise you contact your local dealer. We installed a second A/C unit, but it was accomplished by the dealer. Another alternative is in a previous post, someone bought a portable unit that sat on the floor and vented out the window. It was not a window unit, but rather one that had two vents that sat in the window. Besides, it was half the cost.

Is your AC unit a 13500 BTU unit or a 15000 BTU unit. If you have the smaller one you might buy the bigger one and replace the smaller one. That might be enough to cool your unit. You might try this before you install a second unit.

I'm in the central valley now helping family. I found a less expensive alternative to adding the 2nd roof top and you wouldn't need 50 amp service either. When it was 109 the other day I was pretty comfortable.

I put a second air into my bounder motorhome, just installed it into bedroom vent opening. I put a smaller one in so I could run it when electricity was low amps/volts.

Firdude has something interesting. I would check it out but not for the money savings as I will have paid for electricity at the park. My bone of contention is the noise. Mine trailer came with a 15000 btu ducted main unit and a 13500 bedroom non-ducted unit. Two weekends ago I was in Hemet area of CA and it was 97 outside. The mainunit ran and kept the living area cool however just to check out the bedroom unit, it was cold at the lowest setting but very noisy. Keep that in mind when you make your decision. Also the bedroom unit cools so well that it fools the thermostat for the main unit. I may need to do something about that or set the temp for the living area lower. Happy trails!

Our 5er is at the dealer right now for a 2nd A/C install in the bedroom vent and I am putting in a 50 amp service. Too hot here in SW Louisiana for one A/C especially if not in the shade.

I have a 2002 Cardinal that stayed too hot for me at temperatures over 94F. I called Cardinal and they assured me that the vent in the bedroom was strong enough to support an air conditioner. Since this unit has a bedroom slide and the closet is across the front I fished # 12 romex from the closet to the vent opening. I ran a new 20 Amp feedthrough in the front of the 5th wheel. I put a circuit breaker in line in this circuit. I installed a 13,500 BTU Carrier A/C in the vent opening. I hung a pulley in a shade tree and lifted the unit into place with the help of a couple of friends. (Yes that makes me a shade-tree mechanic.) When I am at the campground I just plug into the 20 amp circuit adjacent to the 30 or 50 amp feeds. I use a # 12 extension cord for the connection. When I get to the campground, I turn them both on and cool the unit down. At night I leave the 2nd one off. I also put a 20 amp duplex outlet in the circuit and in the winter time I use it for electric heat. The second circuit is entirely independent of the original and doesn't require any power management. Nothing fancy, but it works for me. Jim

We put the second air in the bedroom. Actually Pilgrim had it installed for us. They put it in place of the Fantastic Fan. We now have a Fan sitting in the garage.
Anyway, back to the air, it was just waaaaaaaaay to hot with just one air. We travel with 2 golden retrievers and 2 Boston Terriers and they MUST be comfortable.
Happy Camping!!!!!!!!!

I love your idea of the cooler. We need something like that for the back of the 5ver. We have a full den in the back but it never gets very cool as I think most of the ducks are directed to the center and front of the rv. I am going to beg my hubby for one. We can use it in one of our back bedrooms at home that has the same problem as the 5ver.
Now I can prove to hubby these coolers really work.
