Can anyone share their experience crossing US/Cananda border bringing salmon to the lower 48? Problems from AK-Can or Can-lower 48? Heading out on Thursday, first time to drive, flew in last time, shipped all fish back. Thanks for any tips.
we usually travel south from alaska to wash state and kentuckey to see family and friends, we make trip each year and usually travel with salmon or crab or both to share with family. never been questioned about fishusually put it either in refrigerator or coolors andhave never had any problems. just be polite to guards answer questions clearly and i dont think you will have any problems. one thing to rember you should have a canada insurance card for automotive insurance, your insurance agent will provide usually free of charge. also i think passports help to ease border crossings.
If you want to be absolutely sure you'll have no problems stop at the US Customs on the way OUT of Alaska and make out a declaration. You'll need the number of fish by species, ie:100 Silver, 30 Red, 20 Dolly, etc., and the number of total packages. The US guys may inspect or not, but you just pass the paper to the Canadian and US customs folks as you pass them the passports, and they won't even ask.
I've been told that if they wanted to, Canadian Customs COULD be difficult if they wanted and fine you for taking illegal fish from Canada. Never talked to anyone who was questioned, but the US declaration cuts it off before the the issue comes up.

When we left Alaska in August 2006, we had 2, 5 cu/ft, freezers in the back of my truck. one full of Salmon fillets and one full of Hallibut. We also had 13 cases of pint jars we had canned.
As we left Ak. we declared them. We would have had to unload the freezers to count everything so we, the Customs Agent and I, estimated them. When we entered Canada we gave a copy to Customs and when we left Canada we gave customs a copy. The only comment made was "Looks like you're going to eat good"
With out the declaration showing the point of origin, they could have confiscated them.
