We use a baby gate to keep ours in the back bedroom area. Instead of the shades I use window coverings that I made from inslulated mylar stuff (they cut down on the heat coming in through the window - and also keep it warmer in cold weather) They can really damage these window coverings like they could the original shades.
I leave a little bit of food and a bowl of water for them, along with several toys and some chewey things. We also leave the vent fan running for white noise. As long as they're in the back where they can't see peoole walking around, they stay quiet.
However, we never ever leave them alone in the van in warm weather or if we're in a place where they could possibly disturb other people. We only leave them when we're in a restaurant or out grocery shopping. We never, ever, leave them alone in a campground, even if they are quiet!

Thanks for the suggestions! I really just don't want them jumping up on the dinette - yuck! I may even try to see if angling the cushions on the benches to it won't be easy to jump up on the bench and then to the table. If that won't work I guess I'll do some shopping for some of the ideas given.

We have a different problem. Our boxer, Duke, likes to sneak up on our bed when we leave the TT (the tell-tale sign of a messed up and warm bedspread clued us in upon our return early on). We now spread our folding drying rack across the bed, which helps. Maybe you could try that on your dinette.
