Gov. Sarah Palin is asking the Legislature to give every Alaskan $1,200 as energy cost relief.
"It's a one-time, special return of the vast wealth that Alaska has right now. We're returning it to the resource owners, the people of Alaska," the governor said Friday. "I am confident the people of Alaska can spend the surplus dollars better than state government is going to spend them."
The $741 million proposal was criticized by some legislators as a shortsighted government handout, but others applauded it as needed help with an energy crisis.

Rushin Roulette - There might just be in Alaska - the state used to give money back from the oil fund every year to every Alaskan living there - based on number of years in the state - or some kind of formula - not sure if they still do. Maybe some Alaskan can set us straight on that. I don't think that Alaska has the deficit problems the other states have to contend with.

$$1,200.00 bucks doesn't go very far these days.....especially in Alaska.

Let them have the money!!!
EVERYTHING is SO far, it has to be very hard to save fuel.
I can't see owning an electric car up there in the winter. It just won't work (batteries like to be warm).
I wouldn't be surprised if Alaska separated from the U.S. and created their own country. They could then charge HIGH PRICES for the oil they are sitting on.
I (2-10-05) bought a 2002 F350 CC SWD PSD and a new 2003 Citation 10'8. Rancho 9000X & Toyo M55's.I have been a tent camper all my life. I wanted more comfort while doing my Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol & Crater Lake Ski Patrol duties.11

I'm not an Alaskan (though I wish I was!) but I know that they still get the refund money each year, which is a good thing since everything costs so much more up there. As for batteries - engine block heaters take care of that in the winter, I believe. Why not give any surplus back to the people?

I guess this is the issue where in some places people pay big money to live in, in other places they need to get paid to stay?
