Hi All,
I'm going to fulltime in my 5th wheel for a period of time while my house is being built. I'm hoping we can get monved in 6 to 9 months from start of the project. Anyhow, what I'd like to do is build a pole barn (30x50) large enough to park the 5th wheel inside. So, if the 5th wheel is couped up in this pole barn are there any safety concerns that I may come across by doing this? That's the question of the day for me. i.e. if I run the heater and fridge on propane, will that create unsafe air to breathe etc...

Thanks for any comments.

You might want to make sure you have a lot of ventilation when running appliances. Carbon Monoxide will sneak up on you.

It would be a good idea to get a Carbon Monoxide (CO) dector and place it inside your fifth wheel. Im don't know what knowledge you have of CO but it is odorless and colorless, so without a detector you will have no idea if you are being poisoned by CO. Becareful. Camp Safe, hope your house gets done sooner than later.

you don't want to run the heater/water heater in a closed structure. The frig will be ok. We lived in our 27' 5er with one big slide in the trees next to our new house construction site for 7 monthes which included one winter. Temps were down to zero but I installed mobile home skirting and added 1/8" lexan over the windows.
have you given any thought to ducting the exhaust outside ?

I doubt you can seal the pole barn tight enough to have to worry about CO. Propane leaks would not be good..... so be careful.

Relatives did that for over a year while they built two houses on adjoining acreage. They had a fifth wheel with two slides and a 32' toad inside a five stall pole garage. They left doors or windows open depending on the weather for good ventilation and never had any trouble with fumes.

Unless you are drywalling the interior of the barn there is no way it will allow noxious fumes to build up to dangerous levels. Were it me, (and I would like it to be me living in my polebarn/5er combo, but that's not gonna happen for quite awhile) I would add a fresh air pipe to the under side of the 5er and a powered vent fan in the attic/roof. Just to be sure...
Heck, I'd plumb in sewer and water while I was at it... Who needs the house???!!!

Thanks all for the replies. Lots of good info. I will be adding electric, sewer, and water. I had additionally thought about plumbing and electric for our full size fridge and freezer along with our full size washer and dryer. Think maybe I'll partition off those items into a small corner in the pole barn and opt to leave the doors and or windows open in the barn depending on weather conditions.
