We have not used our tt in 4 weeks. It has been sitting in our driveway since the last time we used it. When we flush the toilet there is a very bad odor coming up from it. This is the first time that we have had this problem. Can anyone give us some help on what might be happening? Thank-you. Eva.

Are you using a tank chemical? If not you should. I would suggest Potty Toddy's, I found they work the best for me.

I haven't used chemicals in 5 years, no smells. Make sure your tank vent is open.

Get some reasonable amount of water into your black tank too. If it continues to stink you may have a venting problem. The vent resembles a home sewer system stink pipe in that it is there to carry sewer gases up and away from our noses. In trailers sometimes the pipe can fall down into the tank and then it cannot carry away the smells if it is submerged in the black tank "contents". This can be further exacerbated when the pipe drops into the effluent and it's top no longer reaches the roof thereby venting what little it can into the trailer.
I hope you have some far smaller issue.

For the first time ever, this last week-end we had a smell from the black tank. I was really dumbfounded! The only thing I can figure, 2 weeks ago I was not able to flush the black tank out as I would like too and perhaps everything did not drain. There was some really nasty stuff still in there.

Since we had full hook-up, I flushed the tank about 3 times. My black and gray join together at the outlet valve, and with a 3rd valve am able to back-flush the black with the gray water, release, and repeat up to 3 good times. Between the back-flushing and rinsing, the smell was gone.

More than likely, you didn't flush or rinse the tank. It's still got something in it. Simply rinse it out really good. I filled ours up all the way INTO the bowl. Then released it all one time just for good measure, to get the smells out of the pedistal part of the toilet.

It worked!

several reasons why your tank stinks, one is have you looked down the toilet yet and see if you have any thing left in the tube that runs from the bowl to the tank. This may be one of the reasons your have an odor. you may have something on the walls of the tank. I use a quickie flush and it sprays every thing off the walls and I have a short hose I use from the bath room sink to clean out the tube. Alone with some happy camper, I don't have that trouble any more.

Did you dump the tank before parking it or leave it partialy full?

Easy way to clean it if you don't have one of those flush kits, is to take a garden hose to the toilet and fill up the black tank all the way to the top, dump it and repeat until it's clean. I throw some tank chemicals into on the second fill and when I'm done I will throw another dose of chemicals with a gallon or two of water.
This is pretty much what I do everytime, if I know the RV is going to be sitting for a while.

I never leave my black tank totally dry when parked.

I will say that the problem is not enough water in the black tank. We had the same problem when we went from a 25 gallon to a 40 gallon tank. We started using "happy camper" brand tank additive and a total of five gallons of water. No More problems. We always flush the tank very good but I still say plenty of water is the real trick.
