Any Dodge megacab owners out there? How do you like it and what type of MPG (towing and not)? Will a 1500 Mega Cab 4x4 5.7L with 3.73 axles tow a trailer with a dry weight of 6720 lbs and max trailer weight of 8500? Equalizer Hitch.

I think the weight police are going to get you on this one. I don't have the Mega Cab, but I know that with my trailer weight of 6500# I'm just over the gross rating for my truck. I think you could probably tow it, but you may not want to. Probably better off with the 2500 and 6.7 CTD. Better MPG too!

I have a 1500 Quad Cab 4x2 with the 5.7L. My trailer is listed at 5800# dry, but weighs in at 7400# ready-to-camp. I typically get 10 MPG city, 16 MPG highway, and 8 MPG towing. Last week, however, headwinds on the trip out pushed that down to 6.9 MPG (the return trip was 8.6).

The problem with most 1500s is that they reach their payload capacity well before their pulling capacity. But, the 1500 Mega Cab has a much higher GVWR than the Quad Cab, more like that of a 3/4-ton. You have about 1800# more GVWR than I do, but the truck weighs 1500# more. I'm just a hair under my limit, but it'll really depend on how much weight you actually put in the truck.

My truck has plenty of power to pull my trailer where I go, which is primarily around Michigan. In 2nd gear, for example, it can easily accelerate up the Zilwaukee bridge from a 55mph roll with trailer in tow. The key is to keep the RPMs up (4000+ if necessary) where the engine makes it power.

But, there are some key differences here. You're looking at 3.73 gears, whereas mine has 3.92s. This means yours would have about 5% less rear-wheel torque than mine. Not a big deal there, but you are dealing with a lot more weight. That 4x4 Mega Cab weighs about 1500 pounds more than my truck, and your trailer is close to 1000 pounds heavier. I seriously doubt I'd be happy pulling 2500 pounds more than I do now.

If it were me, I'd be looking at other alternatives.

I had exactly what you have: 1500 Mega 4x4 with hemi, and 3.73. I believe it was rated at 7500 trailer weight. I pulled 7000 few times and no issues powerwise. Mileage is horrible, empty if I got 12 mpg in combined driving I was happy. Do not believe those 15-16 mpg EPA rating, I always wonder where they get those. I loved the truck otherwise (so did my kids), I still miss it every day (not the $120 bill at every fill up). And it is not comparable in anything to 1500 QC trucks with Hemi so most of the numbers do not apply.

I have an 06 MEGA Cab. I love the room in the truck. I also love the power it has for towing. The TT weighs 5200# dry and about 6500 loaded. I have to keep a close eye on the speed (I have caught myself doing 75) with plenty of power to spare. Now for your setup I believe that your MAX tow is 8500# so you would be at your MAX limit.(not a good idea)
Now as for mpg nowtowing combined its about 13 on a good day(hwy maybe 16). Towing at best its 10 mpg. If I have a heavy foot or lots of hills or strong headwind its down to 8mpg.

I love my Megacab, but mine is a diesel, so cannot tell you about gasser mileage.

You do know that the 1500 mega cab is really on a 2500 series frame right, so it will have a heavier curb weight, which can cut into the payload...

You mention 6720 dry and 8500 gvwr, what does it actually weigh?? find that out and compare that to the tow capacity of the 1500 series mega cab..

just to compare against the gas mileage reported.. Here is what I get.

empty 55-60mph ~18-20 mpg

empty 70--75mph ~15-17 mpg

towing 9500lb TT 60-65mph ~11-12mpg.

Regards,

Bryan

1500 megacabs are as follows. "a" is auto tranny, "g" is 3.73 gears, "i" is 4.10 gears

1500 2WD 5.7L V-8 7,900 (a,g)
1500 2WD 5.7L V-8 8,900 (a,i)
1500 4WD 5.7L V-8 7,450 (a,g)
1500 4WD 5.7L V-8 8,450 (a,i)

with 3.73 gears, you could get in trouble with the GVWR of the TT

...and just so you know, the only thing "1500" about a Megacab 1500 is the number on the door. It's a 3/4 ton through and through. 8 lug axles, 8510# GVWR, and the same frame as the 2500, 3500, and 3500 dually Megacabs.

I have a 2007 Megacab 1500. I will be looking into upgrading my existing Palamino Elite to a TT. I want to get a slider, prefer seating area with swivel captain chairs and a shower rather than a tub/shower. Any advice on what weight range for TT would be appreciated. By the way, it is a 5.7 hemi. Really thankful for that since diesel is going for arround 5.65 / gal in this area.
