i had the same problems with my onan in my old class a. the voltage regulator that is being refered to in an earlier post is actually a resister, it's purpose is to lower the dc output from the genny for battery charging and supplies voltage to the control board while running. when that resister burns out the unit wiull run as long as the switch is pressed but will die when you let go, just as you described. usually what will happen is the little 12v fuse at the genny will get hot and blow from doing this, and then you will get nothing, like you described. check the fuses on the genny and see if they are blown. if so, replace them then try to restart the genny. if it starts but only runs when the button is held, then it is either the resister or the control board. those resisters are actually more common failure than the control board. i bought mine from cummins and cost more for the shipping than the resister.

Are there other fuses besides the one that pulls out right by the starter switch on the generator? I've check this fuse, but if there are others that may have blown I don't know where to look.

Thanks

Jim, on my Minnie the coach battery switch MUST be ON to crank the gen set. A simple check of the Gen set starter circuit.

With the generator's service door removed, the starter relay, sits above the control board on the extreme left side for the Gen Set. At least on mine, the battery + lead is bolted to the outside terminal (nearest to the opening). This cable goes to the coach battery to supply +12 VDC. The negative lead is connected to the chassis frame.

If you check with a VOM at the starter relay and have 12 VDC to Ground, then you should check that voltage while cranking the Gen Set. If it drops to less then 8 volts then you have a battery problem.

You can also use a jumper cable from another battery source between the starter relay and chassis to crank the gen set while bypassing your coach battery.

Jim

Have same problem, will only run if holding button (same model). Cleaned slip rings and brushes, checked oil pressure switch to make sure it opens, all is okay. The only thing thats left is the board or the voltage regulator. Either one can be bought from Flight Control systems. Give them a call they're very helpful.

Update

Just came back in from checking the gen. First checked to see if I was getting 12V to the regulator by checking pin 7, 12V okay, then to see if I got 120V at the breaker, no power. It's the voltage regulator. Ordered new one. Hope this helps.

Do you have a number or web address for Flight Control Systems?

Thanks
Jim
