This is one of my favorite topics!

Let's just say a dog is traveling in a safely secured, properly sized dog crate, the temperature is just right, and there is plenty of ventilation. Let's also assume there are not any "flying projectiles" zinging around the interior of your trailer. (I've never had any, myself ).

Then would it be OK for a dog to ride in a trailer that has the exact same suspension and ride as a commercial dog hauler???

No, the dog is in a crate that is loose in the TT, it will fly around in a quick stop.....the compartments in a commercial hauler are just that each dog in a compartment = quick stop the dog only moves a few inches either way.
A panic stop in a TT the 'crate' becomes the projectile flying across the room crashing into a wall and/or maybe out a window.

I use term commercial hauler loosly, I am speaking of the ones used for greyhound transportation and the ones used by gun dog sport enthusiasts.

'Technically' it is a safer way to transport the dog vs loose or crated in a TT.

I am NOT a believer of using either mode of this way of transportation it's just a fact of how it works.

My crates in my MH are bolted to the base of where they sit.
In the case of my conversion van the crates where against each and the walls of the van, they could not move around in a panic stop.

Hit us head on doing 80 miles an hour and I am sure we would all be dead not matter what how we secured the crates.
But you can not deny the fact that a too quick turn, someone cutting you off, etc., with a TT is an accident waiting to happen for the pet traveling in the TT.

Rock,

If you look back you'll see I say in a secured crate; that means strap the crate down in the TT just like you strap them down in a motorhome. An ideal location is under the dinette secured to the booth preventing the crate from moving (or better still attached to d-rings screwed into the floor); another location is on the floor between a bed and the wall secured so it cannot move.

Like you I prefer to have my dogs in the same compartment with me; however, I know this is an emotional choice and really no safer than in the TT (assuming a secured crate and temperature controlled).

Not to belabor the point, but I mentioned the same point as well. I would hope anyone would have sense enough not to just plop a dog crate down in a trailer, close the door and say "See ya when we get to Disneyland, Rover!

My post was not directed at you guys, sorry it came off that way.
Sadly there are people that do it. I think all of us have seen it one time or another while RV'ing. IMHO I don't think the average pet owner thinks of going thru the whole process some of us might, to ensure safety. And really, I don't think they do it intentionally.

When I had my TT and realized that when I arrived not only did I have to go thru all the unhitching, etc. But I then had to transfer crates from the TV to the TT and set them all up and then reverse the process. I have to admit there 'were' a few trying times I did gave way to some thought about how I could safely bolt them into the TT and 'if' I'd be comfortable with it. This 'was' the reason I sold it and bought a MH, no more schleping crates back and forth.

Rock,

One of the reasons we like our current rig is the dogs can stay in the van; our guys are more likely to get dirty while competing "on the field" than yours will while competing in the ring. This way the dirt (and other stuff) stays out of the trailer.

I think if the temps are to cold outside you should be sure and leave the propane on and the oven on to keep the trailer warm.

You should check the laws of the states you travel through. In PA, you cannot have a dog lose in your car. They need to be restrained in some way. They will not pull you over for it, but like seat belt laws, if they pull you over for another offense you can be sited for it. I have a harness vest thing that my dogs wear that hooks up to the factory seat belt. It is the Four Paws Safety Seat Vest Harness. It spreads the weight out across their whole chest vs small straps. the nice thing is, it can be hooked to your leash on potty breaks so you don't have to fuss while getting them out.

Too rough and can get too hot in the summer. Ask the dog owner how she would like to be locked up in a hot rattling box.
