When we had a manual awning we would secure it with tie-downs to keep the wind from ripping it off. We now have a power awning on the motorhome and are wondering if we can tie it down the same way we did the manual awning?

Depends, hate that answer don't we, but my weatherpro has a sensor to roll up the awning if the wind is to strong. So if you have that and it is enabled, mine does have a disable switch, then I would say no don't ite it down. If instead the power mechanism just keeps you from using a rod to muscle it up and down I would it to work the same.
Safest bet though would be ping the manufacturer for your awning with the model number.

I have an A&E awning and you can tie it down like a manual one. The only difference between my electric and a manual one is it has a motor to unwind and windup the awning and you cant put the legs down.

If you don't have the on/off switch to bypass the wind sensor and the wind reached a level where it was in danger, it would roll up and tip your RV over.
Well, maybe it would just damage the awning.

We have a Colorado Carefree electric W/O wind sensor. It rolls out. I was told by Colorado there is no need to tie down. The motor mechanism locks it securely in position some how. Seven years-no problems.

Have not done it but have thought about it.

One problem is the wind sensor, the second is the lack of awning rail to ground support and finally my awning is designed such that the springs in the extension arms are overridden by wind tension on the fabric allowing the awning to give in a strong wind or gust by partially closing.

I would have to install two poles to support the awning, using some sort of tie to hold them under the awning rail. I would then install two rods between the coach roller on the coach and the rail to keep it from trying to close because of the wind. Then tie it all down real good and tape up the wind sensor or even better, disconnect the power to the motor and control.

The manufacturer, in my case Girard, would never buy off on this. I think that the awning will withstand strong winds and will take care of its self with the auto retract from the wind sensor. On the other hand, I do not believe that the coach wall and attach points will withstand the same forces. I guess the short of it is that I wish Beaver built coaches as well as Girard built awnings!

I do not have a wind sensor on this coach but it does have a wind release that keeps it from being ridget in the wind but not retracting it. I guess that would defeat the purpose of the release. DAAAAH sorry

Same as this answer, except we do have the wind sensor, but it has an on/off switch, so it can be removed from the circuit and you can still tie down the awning.

I tie mine down, I like the extra security. If you have the wind sensor, turn it off before tying it down. Mine is just the electric awning and tying it down works fine.
