Planning to take Vermont Route 4 from I-89 to the New York border. Can anyone comment about road condition, size of shoulder, hills, or other attributes?

Choice is this route or all the way out 90 then up 87 from eastern MA to get to the Lake George area.

Thanks for any and all comments.

Rt. 4 is a nice scenic route however, if time is a factor, most map sources do take you out 90 to 87 (from Boston).

I'll be watching the replies here as I need to go the other direction from Albany to Lebanon, NH...

Clemkad, you didn't say where in NY you were headed, but to avoid to long loop south around Lake George, you may want to think about RT22 north from Whitehall to Ticonderoga, You could follow it on Google Earth to see if it is as flat as it appears on the map.

One thing for sure, we don't want to purchase fuel in NYS if we can help it.

We've driven Rt 4 across VT many times. Generally, a good road. The only real hill is near Killington, but it isn't anything major. There is very little shoulder on some sections, especially between Queechee and Woodstock.

I've taken that route to Lake George at least 10. Rte 4 is a nice road to travel. It runs along a river in Vermont and has a lot of bends. You shouldn't have any problems in that area. There is an up hill pull over Kilington Mountain to Rutland Vermont. Take your time going over the Mountain. There are places to pull off if you start to over heat. Lake George is a great place to go. I'm going back there with my boat in August.

Have a great trip!

East to West: Woodstock can be a little congested by traffic. Woodstock to Killington, picturesque along river, winding, small shoulders. Killington, only noteworthy incline. Rutland, watch your signs and follow 4, some traffic. Rutland to NY border, divided interstate.

Hello,
Where are you picking up Rte 4? We travel to Lake George that way all the Time. We are in Fram and head towards Rutland and take 4 over to Lake George. From Fram we take 2 to 140 to 12 to 103 then get on 4. We are pulling a 35' fiver and have never had a problem. There is a big truck stop that is easy to get in and out of in Whitehall. We usually stop for fuel there on our trip both ways. There can be a lot of traffic coming into Lake George so be patient it can be a wait.
