Hello,
We are planning 2 weeks in SW Colorado. Traveling w/ 2 kids (16,11) and a 32ft class C + toad. We don't have reservations but we want to stay in this area so we can travel the region with our toad. This would be base camp for us so we would like something nice w/ electric/water (full hookups better).
We had planned to stay at Ridgway and/or Mueller but they are too far north. These are the types of campgrounds we like. We prefer National Forest/SP campgrounds near a river, creek or lake in the mountains with a scenery typical of Colorado and pleasant weather.
We would appreciate any recommendations for the Durango area.

Try Navajo State Park - full hookups and in the right area. Great scenery and great lake. Spent 10 days there last year.

We like Alpen Rose it's a FH park with cable,WiFi and a pool and arcade it is about a mile or two out of town one area has large trees and one in the meadow. We have also stayed at The United Campground of Durango it is also a FH park with WiFi and pool and more trees and it is closer to town the BIG PLUS for this one is the narrow gage train runs right through the campground both morning and evening and you can get some great pictures times are usually in the office. these two are both on the northeast side of town keep in mind these are both RV parks not forest campgrounds but I don't think you will get HU in the forest service campgrounds. Have fun

For immediate and thorough responses search this forum for `Durango' then search the results for `campground' and read on.

We stayed at United Campground a couple of years ago. Central to all things Durango and you can watch the train come through

We stayed four nights a Alpen Rose a couple of weeks ago.
Campground was OK, around $43 per night.
While you are in the area don't miss the Durango/Silverton train ride, well worth the money.
