Seeing the post from Chris on Pemex made me think: What if Pemex decided that one way they could rescue the company would be to charge world oil prices ( or close) for fuel. Would you still RV in Mexico? Inflation would be rampant. Most prices would probably go up by 30 to 50%. The whole country would change. Would you be willing to pay more for fuel, food and still have to pay those outrageous tolls? I would think that some of the above is bound to happen. Comments??

moisheh, yes, we would probably still travel to La Peñita for 5-6 months every winter. We would probably use the libre roads more on the way down and back. We would also likely not travel around the country as much, kind of like we are doing here this summer, mostly staying put and taking day trips.

It would throw the country into economic collapse wouldn't it? Or, wages would have to increase sharply to compensate for the cost of public transportation, consumer goods and food.
By my poor math skills and calculations, if the bus fare is now 6.50 it would go up to 10.50. Riots would occur and work strikes immediately after the increase.
The energy reform is the only solution, break the union, clean up the mess, and reinvest the profits for say the next 10 years. An increase in property tax and salary would help to compensate for losses from not milking the cow.
Effective next month a new tax of 2% on cash deposits of 25,000 pesos or more goes into effect. Many good reasons for it but it will change the way many Mexicans live. One, it will force businesses to formalize and register with Hacienda, and two, it will help to reduce money laundering.
In my case, I present a recibo de honorario. The companies cash it from their petty cash fund in the accounting office. Checks can take up to three weeks for suppliers. So now I have to have a direct transfer. Impact on me, I have to provide additional paperwork to my accountant. A nuisance but the overall effect is worth it.
Property tax is ridiculously low. Get this, .3% of the appraised value. No wonder . . . . . . . . . .

Moisheh, Yes we would continue to travel to Mexico each winter. The cost is not the primary reason we head SOB each winter. It is the change. Change in weather, people, food, pace of life and more. WE ENJOY OURSELVES!

We also would continue to travel in Mexico during the winter. When we feel safer in Mexico, than we do in most cities of the US, why should we stay here.

Absolutely without a doubt. We enjoy our travels both in all of North America including Canada US and Mexico. All three countries have a lot to offer and I can't imagine restricting ourselves to just one culture....or food type, regardless of cost.
Come visit us at our website and share in our great fulltime RV Adventure.

There is no doubt that we might consider Winter destinations other than Mexico for a change! We have certainly been spoiled by the close proximity and low prices but there are other places on this great Planet that have Warm Temperatures and Sunny Skies , not to mention Beaches and Temperate Waters! And Mexico isn't as Inexpensive as It used to be even Today!
Considering Bali Vietnam and Cambodia as possible destinations!

Gas would have to go up quite a bit in Mexico to match what moisheh and I pay in Canada. Yes I would be back in Mexico but, like Stan we would stay parked more. Life is too short to become a willing "victim" to economic Feudalism.
How about you moisheh? Would you give up your little Hacienda and spend the windy winter on the corner of Portage and Main?

We too would continue to travel in Mexico. Too darn cold in Canada. We would miss all our Mexican friends, the lines at the bank, the aduaneros, the cheating gas pumps and of course the food!!! I posed this question knowing full well that most of the regulars here would also continue to vist Mexico. However I wonder about the masses. Just go to any of the larger RV parks in Maz. and listen to the conversations. The Canadians all talk about the price of booze ( their word not mine). They speak no Spanish and never mingle with the people other than going to some 4 peso Taco stand. For these people it is all about money. Maybe I should have posed this question: Would you continue to travel in Mexico if the price of liquor doubled??
